I was curious if anyone can tell me wether it's finally time to take the plunge to Vista...or if i should stay with XP?
I know that Vista was lacking drivers, support, and alot more recently...has that changed?

well. it really depends. through my knowledge i do understand there are still problems with vista, support, drivers, etc. but it also depends on you too. some people tend to like vista more and vice versa with xp. personally i still like my XP. I have no problems and have the knowledge of its workings.
there's another downside you may have to entirely relearn vista's new workings. i have played around with it alittle, it looks amazing, but has its hidden problems. of course, they can be overlooked in cases and i know people who love vista. you may want to try it out for yourself somehow.
Also for reference do you do any computer gaming?

Vista has gained a lot of support recently. I've found that my copy has support for everything I use. I've also found the wonderful benefits to DX10. It makes supported games look years ahead of DX9. (Hellgate London is a great example) When I upgraded to 64 bit Vista they didn't have support for my printer, but that came out within a week of my upgrade. So it wasn't really a hassle. I find that the bulk of Vista complaints come from people who went with the 64 bit version well before it was ready for commercial use.

What real benifits other then the ability to add additional ram do you get with 64 bit vista over 32?

Unless you're willing to get 8gb+ of ram, you're going to suffer greatly if you get 64bit over 32bit for gaming. |

Having used both 32 bit Vista and 64 bit Vista with a wide variety of games, I've found that I run smoother using 64 bit. At least with the more modern games. As far back as Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines or Doom 3. This may be due to the 64 bit utilizing more of my video card memory, but I'm not sure. I only use two gigs of RAM though, so I would argue with Syn here on the requirement of 8+gigs of RAM.

There was an article on Tom's Hardware about this, without any supporting benchmarking, and the article got pretty soundly criticized (over there at least). (Edit: whoops. I opened this Window before Syn's link. He beat me to it. Check out some of the discussion for the article). Edited by Venture - 19 Feb 2008 at 8:59pm |

well xp and vista have a big difference for that. Directx, you may be familiar with it comes in two recent versions 9 and 10. xp uses 9 and vista 10. some newer games utilize directx 10 but most others especially older prefer directx 9. older games will not use directx 10.
if its a laptop i'm assuming you're not going to have screaming performance for gaming(SLI 8800GTX) but if your playing older games like lets say command and conquer or the first ghost recon xp will be fine. however that does not stop you from getting vista. either way you should be O.K. i will warn you that vista can be a system hog and i would recommend at least 2 gigs of memory. it uses by itself around 1. |

Well I just got my Rig from DS on 2/12/08; and I got the Dual Operating System; I got Windows XP and Vista Premium 32bit. The reason I did it was for Gaming; and my online Business using my POS software. But since I set both OS's up and downloaded all my games on XP and everything else on Vista; I hardly get off of Vista; and after speaking to Kelly the other day on the phone he told me to Put my game 'The Witcher" on Vista. Well since I did that I dont even venture over to XP. Not really regretting doing the Dual OS; cause I know I will have XP if I need it; but if I were to do it over again what I personally would do is a Dual OS with Vista 32bit & 64bit and just forget XP.
Im really loving Vista; and the feel & Look are very clean; lots of great options; more user friendly; yes their are tiny annoyances; but overall Im luvin it. I really havent had any driver Issues and so far Ive hooked up my Logitech G15; my Logitech G5 mouse; my HP 7310 Printer; My Zebra LP2844 Label Printer; Samsung 226BW Monitor; my Pelouze Scale; VOIP Phone System and havent had 1 issue with any of the drivers; and all the witcher needed was a Hot-fix for Vista. I may have had to add other Hot-Fixes; etc for various things; but overall it was very simple and easy and everything is running smooth.
If you do go for Vista just be sure to go online to get the correct drivers and make sure to read everything because some of your sofware or hardware may need a Hot-Fix as well as the Vista Drivers. But overall I dont think Ill ever even use my XP unless necessary.
Sorry for the long reply but wanted to give my my First Experiences with using Vista. I felt the same way you did and thats why I got the Dual OS. If I had to do it over I would skip the XP and just do as I stated above and get 32 & 64 bit Vista instead.
Hope this helped you!!

I've had zero issues with Vista. I do not regret going with this OS.

Thought I'd chime in with my Vista 64 bit experience. I've had zero problems so far - initially, the rig came incorrectly with 32 bit Vista, and I had 2 pink screen of death crashes. Since installing 64 bit, zero problems (knock on wood) and the machine is quite snappy. That said, I've only had it about a week and a half.
Here are the programs I use just fine: - Firefox - Adobe Premiere CS3 - Neverwinter Nights 2 (game client, DM client, toolset) - Crysis - The Witcher - Acronis True Image - Syncback SE I have a few other programs and games I will be installing soon. The only thing that was somewhat of an issue was configuring my print server. I have a Linksys PSUS4, which acts as a network hub and also a printserver. Vista is not officially supported, so digging around on the internet I found instructions on how to configure my access to the printer using the numerical IP address of the print server. It seems to work fine, although I haven't tried printing anything over a page long yet. |

Hello all,
I have been using Vista64 sense about last September and have thrown all my games and productivity SW at it. It works like a champ. So all my hardware and ran all but a tiny few very old games.
On 2gigs it is useable. On 4gigs it flys, highly recummended. On anything over that it would be a real screamer.
If you have the 3-4gigs in you PC I would highly recummend Vista64 else go with XP32 for gaming or Vista32.
