Which should I go with? Does it really make any difference for someone who just plays games and messes around?  Any frustrations with one version and not the other?

Won't make a difference. Ultimate just has more goodies.
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

I remember seeing something about Ultimate that enables it to make your desktop wallpaper a moving scene.

Now I imagine the rest of the goodies being similar in usefulness but definitely up there on the 'cool' factor. Both operating systems do what they are supposed to do, the ultimate just has a few extra pieces of flare.

I was at one time considering it, but have since decided against it. Despite the fact it was once my dream to have a moving desktop... I couldn't justify the extra price for it. The money not spent on Ultimate went back into making my system more powerful overall.
