I'm down to my final issue before I hit the pretty shiny "Buy" button, do I get Vista or XP?  I do the normal things: browse, listen to music (Slacker FTW), and play WoW....plus a few other games.  Vista caused anyone any headaches lately?

Thanks!

Bill

I'd stick w/ XP Pro w/ Sp2 for now.  You can always go to Vista later (or dual boot), and there is a sp due out for it as well.  However, the only reason I can see getting Vista now is for DX10, but looking at the games you'll be playing (WoW) it would be irrelevant.  Ive said it b4 and I'll say it again....Vista has more issues than Time Magazine.  have fun & good luck.Cool

Vista has been kind to me thus far.  I have no problems with the version I use.

I'm currently looking at 4GB of Ram, 2 150GB Raptors in Raid 0 config

I'm considering getting XP Home and Vista Home Premium 64-bit in dual boot configuration.  Should I go ahead and pony up for an aditional 320GB WD drive?  My concern is the partition formatting, doesn't Vista use a different the drive format other than the NTFS?  So what would be the best way to split my drives up, and would DSO do it? :)

I'm just so torn by all the reviews and opinions, I keep thinking maybe I should just ditch XP.  But then the other half of me says, XP isn't broke, why fix it?  But then another half...yup, a third half....says, Vista is SO pretty, I like candy.

I'm sure ya know how it is.

Thanks!

As far as I know NTFS is still the format Vista uses. First I heard of this.

Vista uses NTFS.  I just formated an exteranal 400GB WD drive from FAT to NTFS and NTFS was the only choice for the format.

I've been reading different boards and such all night about 64 bit Vista and gaming....the horror stories.....or lack there of in a lot of cases.  I figure I always have my XP Pro disk to fall back on.  So here it is, just tell me to hit the scary "Buy Configuration" button :)

Thanks for all your input by the way, it's much appreciated!  I hate making decisions, and I'm tired of falling into the "wait for the next new thing" syndrome.

Good choice on the OS! I've found Vista 64 excellent - fast, intuitive, and largely problem free.

I would go for the 1200VA UPS instead of the APC 650VA Uninterruptible Backup Power Surge Conditioner (Recommended).

I have a Twister Pro with an 850 Power Supply and had 2 differnt 550 VA UPSs constantly have Vista thinking the battery was running low and would shut down the system.  I bought a 1300 VA UPS and have had no problems since.

I would consider going without the RAID. RAIDed raptor drives are twice as likely to fail. Which can cause some major headaches.

I have been running Vista on 2 PCs for the last few months and i didn't have any major problems with Vista. It has quite a few bugs and strange quirks, to be sure, but nothing that can't be fix. I remembered that WinXP gave me more problems than Vista did when it first came out. It took MS quite a few years before WinXP became stable enough. If you want MAX performance go with the Raid 0 Raptors. It has its drawback but i think the performance gain is enough to take the risk, no different than Overclocking your CPU or video card----No Pain No Gain Smile

There's not much point in getting 4 Gig of RAM unless you are going to get a 64-bit OS. Chuck the extra memory, get the extra drive.

You need a third drive for data and for backing up the RAID. Definitely get a program like "True Image" or "Ghost" to do a total back up of the system drive.

Vista was supposed to have a new improved file system. It was one of the first things M$ punted on.

based on what I just read on this site I posted above (which was updated in November) I don't see it being worth it to get 64 yet, especially since I was only planning on getting 2 GB of Ram for now. I would say unless u absolutely cant go without the 4 GB of Ram just hold off on 64 bit. Anyways thats my opinion. There are plenty of people that are happy with 64 but then again the question that always enters my mind is are the newer released games going to work alright with it? idk i just like to be on the safe side when it comes to that sort of stuff.
ie. waiting on this game to drop for over 2 years, the day it releases I get a screwy compatibility error!       >X|            /die

Well i have tried a lot of the new ones. And so far not a one has failed to run without me doing much at all. {The only reason I say that is Masquerade, some Vampire RPg game. For it I had to turn on compatibility mode for it to run. all others worked fine

that is encouraging tirna, but I was mainly referring to the upcoming releases.. not the ones already out although that does say something if ALL of them have worked so far. Have you tried WOW and COD 4 yet? let me know.. Warhammer Online is going to be the next big MMORPG IMO and many others as well. That's kind of what I meant was games that haven't been released yet, there is always that risk of something going wrong and since I only have 2 GB RAM anyhow at the moment, no point in me making that kind of risk.

I would stick w/ 32bit w/ Vista or Xp.  There don't seem to be enough apps or games especially that utilize this.

Morning,

Don't know about WOW, never played it. But COD4 works bloody great for me. And Crysis worked great once I used the 64bit exe over the 32bit one. The 32 worked but performance was terrible. The 64bit exe for it flew on my PC.

Newer games and ones coming out should have no problem. Its some of the older games that might give a hick up. Like my wife likes all these games that were designed for win95/98 :(.
Slowly trying to drag her up to the 21st centrury gaming. :)
