Ok, I'm taking a poll.

With gaming a priority how many of you are sticking with XP, and how many are going(or have gone) to Vista?
And also how many are waiting for SP 1 before making the jump to Vista?

I went with  XP Media Center Edition. I've heard too many bad things about Vista to be convinced to go with them at the moment. If some keys games (StarCraft II :P) are Vista only, I'll upgrade, other than that, I don't see the reason to.

I currently have a Gateway <retail, yes, I know> using Windows XP. It has that horrible nVidia Geforce 7300 LE video card which shares memory. I am thinking I should not upgrade to Vista, as the shared memory will cause some problems in Vista.

You agree?

Vista is good now, and since your getting a new PC, it's perfect. Also it comes with Direct X 10. Microsoft is going to discontinue XP next year.

Are the drivers getting better for Vista now?

Is the gaming performance better than when Vista first came out?

Also is 2G memory good enough for Vista 32-bit?

Yes better then when Vista first came out. It matured faster then XP did.

Recommended memory for Vista is 1GB.

SP1 beta is out, goes retail by Q1 2008 at latest.

XP SP3 is rumored to be released in 2008.

I don't know.  I still have mixed feelings about Vista.  It's a resource hog and is known to really bog down when you're trying to muti-task with other programs at the same time.

I will most likely wait until I see Vista stabilize a bit more with it's compatibility issues.

I have a Vista laptop and it works fine for me. Since i don't have time to play too many games anymore, the compability issue isn't that big of a deal for me and it's already getting much better. Vista is a lot more stable than WinXP, in my opinion. You have to remember that MS has to rewritten the code for Vista from the ground up instead of using code left over from Win98. The upgrade path from Win98 to WinXP is not smooth either, there are Win98 games that still doesn't run in WinXP without some kind of software emulation and WinXP has been around for quite sometime now.

IMHO, I wouldn't touch Vista right now. I see no advantage in 32-bit Vista over XP and numerous problems.

I've moved from DOS to Windows 3.1 to Windows for Workgroups to Win 95 to Win 98 to XP. I've never upgraded until a program I needed required the new OS. That's typically been a year or more after the OS was released. By then, in each case, most of the dust had settled.

Wow!
I have no idea what the other guys are talking about.
I have Vista 64, Vista 32 till I got my new DS Pc a few weeks back :).
When Vista first came out the driver issues were bad, but as one above said it got better much faster then XP did.
As to gaming and multi-tasking.
On a 2 gig or more system Vista blows XP away. 1 gig on Vista is in my opinion the bare minimum for the OS.

I recumend Vista on newer PCs with 2 gigs or more. I have tried out a good few games and other apps on Vista and its been a breeze to go thru. Usually have myself and Wife logged into Pc, shared PC :(.
We usually have Outlook2007 open on her side with IM and some Sidebar applets and IE7. On my side even when gaming at full resolution (16050x1280), I have Im, multiple copeis of IE32/64, various sidebar apps, windows explorer and sometimes Media player running all while playing a game at full screen.

So multi-tasking is fine. Much quicker then XP was for me.

On the DS machine I ordered last week, I went with XP home.

I currently have 3 machines - XP, XP Pro, and Vista Home Premium.

Vista leaves a lot to be desired at the moment.  XP and XP Pro are rock-solid - they'll run anything I want to run on it and never crash.  I did the math awhile back and calculated that over the 11 combined years I've had the two XP machines, I have over 80,000 hours of uptime as I never shut these machines off unless I'm going out of town for more than 3 or 4 days or there is an electrical storm.

Both XP machines still have their original installation of Windows - for my XP machine, windows was originally installed July 16th, 2002.  Crazy.

So, until Vista really comes through with something jaw-dropping while at the same time continuing to improve compatability and the user experience, I'll use XP.

As far as the speed improvement of Vista over XP, here's my looney theory that is in no way backed up with anything other than anecdotal data:

XP will run very fast on 512 mb of ram.  I have that on my current XP home machine, and never have any complaints.  MS's recommendation for XP Home is 128mb of RAM.

Vista needs a minimum of something like 768mb to run cleanly (official minimum is 512, but that's an experience I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, and is a reason there's a lawsuit in the works over MS's claims of machines being "vista ready"), and for all intents and purposes, you need  1gb to have a passable experience.  However, since it is such a resource hog, everyone recommends that you run it under 2gb of RAM.

Now, people who go from XP to vista, chances are, will be running a program that they used to run on XP.  Suddenly, that program that would run fast under the 256mb or so of free memory on their XP machine, will find themselves able to use perhaps a full gig of RAM that isn't being used to run Vista.  So that program is naturally going to run faster if it is able to take advantage of it - assuming it's not a really, really old program.  Also, that Vista machine is new, so it has a newer processor, faster RAM, and so on.

What I'd like to see in these declarations of vista going faster than xp would be a side-by-side comparison of a current MoBo, Processor, and 2gb of RAM - first installed with XP for benchmarking, and then wiped and installed with Vista for the same program.

I'd be willing to be that in many cases, XP would be faster since inherently it requires less of your RAM, which can be put towards the programs you're running.

I agree, Vista is the way to go, drivers are only going to get better, software is getting caught up too, i.e. more DX10 titles on the near horizon.

I also agree Vista is better on a new machine designed to run this OS vs upgrading a older machine. I've read a lot of posts about this and the biggest complainers of Vista were people using it on machines that were not up to specs. And also were running older drivers that just made matters worse.
I'm going Vista, for better or worse.

Go for it, please! I own M$ stock and have kids starting college. Personally, I'll stick with XP for an other year or so.

Exactly. Vista work best on a new PC or a clean install. Most people are having problems only when they use the upgrade options instead of a clean install.
