Why is everyone so afraid of Vista? You would think this isn't a community of extremely savvy users. Everybody's so dramatic.

I agree. It's like a bunch of Lemmings following each other off a cliff.
Step 1: Buy Vista Step 2: Search for Software & Drivers Step 3: Install New Software & Drivers Step 4: Have a Cocktail in Hand While Doing This and Have Fun! |

I think it'll be coming to the windows updater in a week or so. Though I've not heard anything definite. Once it's in the updater, we'll be using it. Provided there aren't any major known issues with it.

I believe Microsoft has stated before that Vista SP1 won't be going retail until February of 2008.

I am downloading it now.
You want it?
Get Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC (Update for existing Windows Vista users) There are 3 different ways to access the Windows Vista SP1 RC depending on the unique business needs of individual users and their organizations.

Don't forget to add:
Step 5: realize your perfectly good (but a few years old) hardware isn't supported by Vista - go out and buy new fax/scanner/printer
Step 6: realize that most programs will run 10-15% slower (at least) on Vista compared to XP.
Also, keep in mind that a vast, vast, vast majority of Service Pack 1 for Vista has been released as the normal updates. SP1 will just roll them all in one for the people who don't update regularly.
Disclaimer - I have 4 machines right now, including one with Vista Home premium. I use Vista, and it has no wow factor to make it worthwhile to upgrade from XP. With Windows 7 just 2-3 years away, Vista isn't the "future".

Heh. You forgot a bunch of steps in there.
You forgot to fight with Vista to get it to realize it is in fact connected to the internet,so you can start that download to begin with. You forgot to spend some quality time trying to explain to Vista that while *it* may not trust a program enough to allow it to launch at startup *you* do (henceforth to be known as the pre-starting -to-startup). You forgot to plead with Vista once it does allow a program past the pre-start-starting-up phase to actually allow the program to proceed to the starting-to-startup. You forgot to remind Vista that it was in fact you that wanted the program to start. By the time the program actually does start, you may have forgotten why you wanted it to start in the first place
There's more, much, much more, but I've had enough fun at Vista's expense for one evening.
Besides. I remember XP pre SP 1, and I will say this for Vista. I had a heck of alot more unexplained crashes and system freezes on XP than I have had on Vista so far, by a long shot.

Runs fine for me too.
Did have the printer issue, HP1100, but I consider that a HP kick to my balls then Vista. HP should deliever a basic driver for the OS.
Went out and got a Canon thats been working great.
