Hello all,
Thought I would start an area for users of the 64bit Vista version to report back to us all how it is.
So far I like it a lot. Its a lot better then all the scare mongering on it out there on the net.
Just found out it has both IE 32 and 64 bit installed on it. The 32 version is much the same as the Vista32 version. But the 64bit version does have some bumps. Flash does not seem to work on it, so no utube thru it. :(
Apps that work for me:
Games:
Age Of Conan: Online,
Lord Of The Rings: Online,
Civ4,
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2,
Sim City 4,
Warhammer: Mark of Chaos,

Tried the BMW 3 car demo last night. Graphics aren't bad, not great. Driving the car seems hard with a keybrd. way to0 slippery on those roads.
How come in driving games it always seems like your driving on a iced over river!

Fifa 2008 demo ran fine.
This game wasn't bad. Demos graphics wasn't too good though and no way I saw to change it. Didn't like the games menu system.
Game play was nice. Lost my first half 0-1. :(

Google Earth works great. Got to find my Grand mothers old house in Cork, Ireland. An Amazing little app that.
Needed a MP3 player as there is some weird popping noise at the end of each song in Windows media player. This by the way does not seem to be a Vista64 player problem as my other PC also does this popping noise.
This AIMP player does not seem to bad. Took my 50+gb playlist and plays it nicely.

Its much better then they would have you believe. So far the only real pain is that I can't seem to get Flash to work in the IE64. Of course it works fine it the IE32 they also included in the OS, so its not too bad.

Good morning all, Quick note on the Fileplanets download manager. In IE7-64 the download links on their pages seems to not be able to identify the version of the download manager. So it keep strying to get you to update the app. Switch to the IE7-32 and the link works fine.

So..... The real question.......
Do you notice a major performance difference while performing basic Windows operations such as browsing the web or just normal use? |

to me and the wife, who does video editing a lot, the everyday performance over our old Vista32 is much better. The UI seems a lot more snappy. :) Switch between logged on users is faster and mutli-tasking seems to have a lot more room.
Would i go back? no! for the few hiccups I have seen its not worth returning to the old 32bit world :) Edited by tirnaog - 27 Sep 2007 at 7:39am |

Jericho:
Very good graphics. Different type of FPS shooter. You get to control 1 of a seven man team in hell and different time zones. Rated for a 6. winIDX system, Mine is now a 4.8 sense I installed nVideo drivers :(.
Probably need a new DX10 card next year sometime.
Tabula Rasa:
A MMO SciFi setting. Graphics were good but I really don't like the 3rd person veiw. So I didn't stay long in the game. But it played pretty good on my system and no problems with Vista64.
I am telling ye all these nay sayers on Vista and Vista64 are smoking crak. System is running great with no great hiccups.
Dreamscene: This is a really nice effect on the desktop. seems to take about 5-7% CPU resources, not so much as to notice it in normal everyday work. But the HD backgrounds can give ya a sense of vertigo sometimes. :)

Well, you sold me. I'll definitely be upgrading soon! I multi-task heavily and have been assuming that upgrading would make a difference but have been told by a few people that it's not worth it.... Seems good to me!

Back again!
Deamon Tools [ISO file disk mounter]
Works great. had to do a reboot after setup. Used it to install the
VS2008 BETA .img file. Note! rename the file to have an
extension .iso beforehand.
Save2Pc Light [Video file grabber]
Cool little app to save Youtube videos to your HDD. Uses different
formats to. Now if I could only figure out why I get video and no
sound on my PPC it would be perfect. Files run fine on the desktop.

Well, I've got three OS's installed including x64 Vista Ultimate and it's fast becoming my favorite system. My X-Fi card used to not work, but now it's working with Creative's new driver. Actually, the only thing I have that isn't working right now is a convolution reverb plugin. The CrypKey licensing program won't run.. Most of the audio programs I've been running actually run better in x64 vs. XP. Memory load-up times for my sampling program (GVI) are probably half as long.
Programs: SONAR 6 Producer Edition, GVI, FL Studio 7 Producer Edition, Vienna Instruments
I did also try the ET:QW demo and it ran at least as fast or maybe even faster than on XP.

Crulend - that's great to hear. I use Toontrack's Drumkits from Hell a lot and my old system used to stutter a ton - Vista 64 is not supported but hopefully it will run well. Nice to gear that other audio apps are running nicely.

Hello to all!
Just tried the F.E.A.R demo. Put all options to max. Ran real smooth.
This lloks like a good FPS. Nice and dark. The invisible ghosts things I think could have been done a bit better but not bad.
Gona dive back in later.
Also atm download CoD4 demo. Been waiting a while for this one. Loved their last PC games in the series.

Well for me it feels much more responsive then Vista32 And a lot better then XP. Multi-tasking is much faster. I can use all of the 4gigs in my system and later if I want I can add more ram.
Plus once newer software is written for the 64bit I should see even better results. I just read online that with the release of Crysis the 64bit will give it a 10-20% boost on a Core Duo system or a 40-50% on a Quad 64bit system.
Can't wait to see that.

I wish I knew more about how the operating systems function so I knew if this had basis in fact, but this is my *impression*:
I think, after seeing feedback on both 32 and 64 bit Vista versions, that Vista was originally concieved as a 64 bit OS, but when M$ looked at the market, they decided to launch as a 32 bit OS with the option to move to 64 bit rather than try and force a 64 bit upgrade in order to sell more units. Again, just based on my gut, not real understanding, I believe that the 32 bit version is going to be increasingly outperformed in every way by the 64 bit version as time passes, because I believe Vista was first designed as a 64 bit OS and the 32 bit version was cobbed together from that. I could be completely off my nut thinking this, but it would explain the slowed performance in the Vista 32 bit version.

When I'm ready to make the leap to Vista 64 bit, can I just add two more sticks of matched Dominator RAM? Is it this simple?

Well you have to install the OS first :)
It will run on 2gig but I would recumend at least 3, 4 is sweat and more is always nice :)

From what I've read, you don't even have to do that. Vista 64 outperforms Vista 32 on 2 GB of RAM. The extra 2 GB are nice to have but not neccesary to see improvements. Hopefully Alex or one of the other DSO techs chimes in on this, since I would like to see what the pros think.

Understood, but my question is type of matched RAM. What I have already will need to be matched? I won't have to replace RAM with 4 matched sticks, will I? Can I just purchase 2 more matched same sticks and be fine with that? This was actually directed toward the poster before you, Tyler. You got in here pretty darn fast with your response, thanks. Oh!
Ya you should be able too no problem. Might want to try match speeds.
If not I believe the system will force the memory to go at the slowest speed.

Ok, so I could use 4 gigs and I would just need to make sure the bus speeds are the same... gotcha. But, I don't want to get it if I really won't see any improvement. No opinions here, please. Would I really need to get 4 gigs with Vista 64 bit and the specs that I have right now. |
