    Posted: 18 Oct 2008 at 11:04am

So I'm pretty new when it comes to anything about computers. Tongue I've looked all over the place: HP, cyberpowerpc, ibuypower, and Dell. Digital Storm seems the place to be, and if I can find the pc to match my needs I know it will be. Ive had the same Dell computer for about seven years and want/need to upgrade it soon.

Im going away to school next year, and figure I can get a pc now and upgrade it as time goes on, but thing is I don't have a big budget to start. Heck I dont even have a decent monitor, just the one that came with the old Dell.

So I have a budget of around $1,500 - $1,700 and am looking for something that can play most if not all current games well. Also i want it to be able to read/write, and be able to easily upgraded. Movies, an TV on it would be a major plus but don't know if that will throw it way out of my price range.

Also I would rather prefer a quad core. What litte I know about video cards is about the Nvidia series, but I do not know much about ATI so I dont know which is better. Like I said I do not even have a decent monitor, but I don't know if I should just pick one up sometime later, or get it with my purchase whenever that happens to be.

I found this build in another post and it looks like its what I need it to be but I'm not sure: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=196492

For any specs anyone posts, can they recomend the monitor size it will work best at?
Is there a pc here within my price range, and any other information that I should have included.. free to ask. Thanks in advanced for any help

this is very upgradable but a bit over your limit, so give me your thoughts.

this can handle any resolution but in resolution higher then 1680 x 1050 you can't play your game at high settings, however down the road you can add another gtx 260 and handle those higher resolutions easily.

you can upgrade your HDD to a veloci raptor, fast drive.

teh case is great so you won't need to upgrade anything on that. It holds 11 total drives, and stock is pretty much at stage 3.

you got enough ram to give you a decent oc speed and handle what ever you throw at it.

here you go Ticket# 196494 --- Price: $1850 (To see this build click here)

your going to get some mixed opinions but if this is all you can afford this is a good build i would however spend the extra money to get 4gb of the 800mhz ddr2 ram.  This is strictly my opinon though if you want the system to last i would save up and wait then spend around 2k so you can get ddr3 memory and the most up to date motherboard

with a 1700 cap you can't go near 790i, that system starts at 1900 bare.

I've tried, no luck so far. but the prices will drop soon I think, due to i7.

i dont know ive been looking around and even a single gtx260 at 1920x1200 with high detail was still pulling over 60 fps in most new games.

ya but for all high settings and every game to be included you will need 2 or the ati 4870x2

anyways, he can use the one he has and later down the road he can add another if he feels the need.

Yeah DST4ME if I can try to squeeze out the money for that system it looks good. Thing is I would rather try and get something a little cheaper so I can get a monitor a little sooner.

Now whats the difference between the MHz in the ram performance wise, and ddr2 and ddr3?

Thanks alot for the lighting fast replies. I got off thinking it would take a little time for anyone to reply. Ouch

Not here and not with me, I work quick.

OK the difference in MHz is not much and ram speed won't make that much of a difference with current CPUs.

I like to point out to you that a new chip is due out in Nov 17th and prices might go down so you might want to wait and maybe get the same system I have listed for a lower price then is listed now.

but if you want us to chop that down then NP, let me go move a few things around, brb.

Do price drops usually come with the release of a new chip, and if so is there like an average drop? Or does nobody really know until it is actually released?

we won't know till its actually released but I'm pretty sure it will drop prices, once the new chip is out, the old chips can't sell for those prices anymore cause the new ones will be going at those prices, so the old chips have to go down in prices.

Okay, thanks alot for all of the help and info. I'll probably float around here until Nov. 17 or get the one that you posted. Thanks again for the great help

I'm looking more at the $1,800 one you posted now, and how would that run with the Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GHz overclocked?

its doesn't hurt to wait, specailly on your budget, 30 days could mean some good savings that can go toward teh much needed monitor

I hope there is a price drop and I hope its a big one so you can get the monitor you really want, cause this system is gonna great, it should b e oced to 3.2GHz and that is what the current qx9770 is running and it costs $1400. you be getting that from your q9550

Oh I have another question... will DS still have the $250 promotion and free ground shipping when that new chip comes out? I thought I may have saw somewhere around here that it is only until then.

If it is only till Nov 17 would I be better off getting it now, or would it still be a better idea to wait.

Not sure what to tell you there, guess that all would depend on if they prices drop and how much.
