My rig:
Digital Storm Custom Rig Windows 10 64-bit Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3401 Mhz, BIOS American Megatrends 2001, 9/20/2010 19:13:52 Ver:08.00.10 Kaspersky Internet Security Recently bought a WD My Book external HD, 6TB, model #WDBBGB0060HBK-NESN System will recognize it well enough, but will not restart with drive plugged in. Will not even let me get far enough to access BIOS. Screen blinks lightly but stays blank. No logo, nothing. I have 2 other WD externals which cause no problem. Boot preference does not seem to be the issue. Are these new ex. HDs incompatible with my 10 year old motherboard? I have not tried updating BIOS because, tbh, I don't know how to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated |

Make sure you havn't plug the WD into the Rear bios Usb Port mainly used for flashing your bios on your mobo read usb port hubs. I'd say to remove the WD drive and getting into your bios boot order. Maybe it's being placed before your boot settup. It's always good to update your bios to the lattest and your mobo drivers. May help out.

I had it plugged in to one of the 2 USB 3.0 ports. The thing is, I can't even get to BIOS with it plugged in. Screen brightens for 1 second, then stays that way. When I unplug, it still won't boot. I need to hard power down to restart. Boot order is the main AOS1, then optical drive, then secondary SSD, then the remaining external HDs. So I don't think it's boot order. I'm wondering if there's just a compatibility issue I can't get around. |

For anyone interested, I found the solution here. The My Book storage drive is formatted for exFAT, which evidently is incompatible with my system. Reformatting the drive to NTFS fixed the problem right away.
