WOW, I'm seeing people asking for pc's for $3000 and up!
What would be the least expensive, but good, pc to build? Edited by pwcorgi - 25 Feb 2009 at 1:34pm |

This is one of the cheapest you can do. This is old technology but it would still be a decent PC. $1325.00 after special savings are applied.

that one needs some adjustments, you got 2gb of ram, its not enough, the os is not 64bit, so once you have 4GB of ram you can't use all your system's resources.
no dvd writer, small psu so you can't upgrade gpu. no oc so you are crawling at 2.5Ghz in short there is a build for $1325.00, but we would not recommend it. Edited by DST4ME - 25 Feb 2009 at 3:33pm |

i did not recommend it, i just gave him the lowest cost machine that would work. He can always get this machine and then buy other parts when he can afford it. If he would say what he would use it for then the lowest price may change.

Thank You SunfighterLC, I do thank the others as well, but at the same time, kinda discouraged by some, because they (and I know they mean no harm) try to get me to get an i7. The benchmark numbers don't mean much to me. Heck, I'm still trying to convince myself to get even a quad core, because I don't think need it.

I'm not advising on benchmarks, I'm advising on performance vs cost.
you can try and game and multitask with 2GB of ram and that 9800gt but if your resolution is higher then 1600 x 1050 your game playing is not going to be smooth and your 2GB of ram are gonna have a hardtime multi tasking. and if you get more ram, it won't matter cause your OS is a 32bit so it won't be able to use your systems total ram. and that system is not really upgradeable, you can't really go sli for more GPU power. As e06028 says the decision is up to you, I'm just pointing out to you the same thing I would point out to my best friend or brother at the end you got to get what you like what you have there is a bare-bone system that can't be upgraded thru the years with little money to stay up to date for $1300, for $600 more you can get a great system that is the latest technology, thus it allows you to spend very little to keep it powerful thru the years. I had a problem with latest technology, SLi tech sucked for me back when PCI-E just came out. So unless Sli'ing has gotten easier to do, I want NO part of it. Whenever I see new tech in the electronic world, I see yellow caution flags. I also don't multi-task, which I believe I mentioned somewhere here earlier. One of the reasons I want the lowest price, is so that I can see which items that I can possibly go up on. BTW, I believe the specs that e06028 sent me included a core 2 quad. I don't see anything much wrong with the specs he sent me, and after a few changes, it will be great for me. e06028, would you please send me another spec, that is still low on cost, that you'll reccomend? Remember I don't care about SLi/Crossfire, and I don't multitask. To be honest, I'm getting kinda frustrated here. |

by the time you make those changes your price will be around something you could get an i7 for.
in short this is it: you can buy a 2004 Toyota with zero mines for $1500 or you can buy a band new 2009 Toyota with zero miles for $1900 - $2000. its that simple, there is nothing wrong with sli, it works great, whats not great is the cheesy games that are not able to take advantage of it. new technology is not sli, its many other things. the i7 has already been proven to improve gaming experience, so there is no discussion there, thats a fact, what does matter is if the games you play support sli and if your monitor can handle 1600 x 1050 or higher resolutions. if the answer to both of those are yes with any game then for the same money you could have gotten a system that with very little upgrade would be able to take advantage of both of those (sli and hi res) vs a system that is just a couple of hundred less and can never take advantage of those. I just want other people reading this thread to understand the difference, all this info is not to change your mind or to push you to get something,I just want the picture to be clear and come from facts. remind me again how many years ago pci-e came out? you think the technology has not improved? I want to point out that I do not recommend this system, if this is the max your budget can be, in that case I recommend you build your own PC. here you go Ticket# 252890 --- Price: $1251 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Antec 900 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz (1333MHz Front Side Bus) (6MB Cache) Motherboard: NVIDIA 780i Core 2 Quad (Chipset: nForce 780i SLI) System Memory: 2GB DDR2 667MHz Corsair Power Supply: 550W Corsair HX (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition) Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 320GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT 512MB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: Standard Factory Heat-sink and Fan Liquid Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a H20: Stage 3 Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Boost Processor: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my processor Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty Edited by DST4ME - 26 Feb 2009 at 4:35pm |

Here ya go. The one DST4ME listed above will work as well. With this one I just upgraded the processor and memory amount. Either one will work for a low cost unit. I know you are not happy with SLI but I assure you if you go with SLI Digital Storm will take care of you (not trying to sell you on it). This one is $1301 before the the bonus discount of $50.00, so your total price would be $1251.00 with free shipping. Remember you get a 3 year warranty with either of these systems.
But I do understand that you want the low cost system so let us know what else we can do for you. http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=253109 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Antec 900 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz (1333MHz Front Side Bus) (6MB Cache) Motherboard: NVIDIA 780i Core 2 Quad (Chipset: nForce 780i SLI) System Memory: 4GB DDR2 667MHz Corsair Power Supply: 550W Corsair HX (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition) Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 320GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT 512MB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: Standard Factory Heat-sink and Fan Liquid Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a H20: Stage 3 Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Boost Processor: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my processor Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty |

I just like to add that if you budget allows you go with the build e06028, he gave you 4GB of ram. mine has 2GB and then you add 2GB later.
Just make sure it does what you want it to, cause it has no room for upgrading or improving. but if you have other questions then ask away |

DST4ME, does Ticket# 252890 that you posted have room to grow?
As I mentioned earlier, that I'm going to build up, meaning just because you chose 2gb of ram, doesn't always mean that I'm keeping it that way. I went ahead and did some changes, Do you like it? http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=253480 Edited by pwcorgi - 27 Feb 2009 at 8:43pm |

when you say room to grow, explain to me what you mean by that, for example if you mean can you add another GPU to that system so it can handle higher resolutions then no, both systems, mine and e06028 can't grow that way.
you can add 2 more GB of ram to be at 4GB, I would recommend that right away. you can upgrade your HDD to a faster one. you can upgrade your CPU but you will not be able to match its FSB to your ram speed, cause ddr2 does not support the FSB of q9650 or qx9770. |

the 64bit is so that you can use your tatal ram otherwise you won't use your system's total ram.
double check with DS to make sure they say a 260 is ok with a 550w psu, now you are at $1500, keep in mind for a little bit more you can get a lot more for your money. Edited by DST4ME - 27 Feb 2009 at 9:26pm |

well like I said earlier a system for $2000 will be something that you can upgrade pretty much as much as you want, and it will be a more powerful system, it has a 1000w PSU so you can use what ever GPU comes out in the future, you are using ddr3 so you can go as fast as the fastest ram out there (2000MHz) keep in mind in a year time all of these things will cost a lot less, in a couple of years for dirt cheap you could purchase a 2000MHz ram, or a core i7 975, as many optical and HD drives as you want, pretty much unlimited.
as for power and speed the i7 I had listed will blow away the e8500. but at the end you got to go with what is right for you. Edited by DST4ME - 27 Feb 2009 at 10:13pm |
