Hey guys i have been a huge pc fan all of my life. The love of pc's came from my dad who has been an it specialist of some sort for over 20 years, and he has always taken care of the know how and such as far as computers go. I want to impress him with knowledge i hope to pick up from doing the research on the new right id like to get and ive noticed all the pre built pc's ive come across have ssd's in them. So this has lead to the question what purpose exactly do ssd's have, how are they different/better than a traditional hard drive. Any answers are welcome, and thank's for taking the time to read my post.

There will be other members with more detailed specs on SSD v. HDD but as starter, SSD= solid state drive. It is entirely electronic (compact and small) and a HDD is mechanical (larger and complex). More importantly, SSDs are much faster than HDDs in the writing and retrieving process and are used (SSD) to store operating systems and programs which make the computer faster. HDDs are then used for storing data (documents, pictures, etc.) The above is all I know.Im%20with%20StupidCry

Programs that save and load manipulated work like in video editing, audio files, etc , and games that load fresh scenes as you move around might not see a big increase or any at all, faster frames per second, will notice a smoother experience.   No lag as files are loaded to screen.

Is an SSD needed? Nope. Windows boots in a minute or two with an HDD and games will still play nice.    With an SSD, Windows loads in 15-20 seconds for some and games work easier doing refresh backgrounds, etc.

Hope this helps.

for gaming, it also depends on how games handle their map loading/area transitions and other assets.  suffice it to say that an ssd can handle this faster.

an ssd has no moving parts, so that eliminates points of failure.  an ssd will degrade over time, just not from mechanical wear and tear/failure.

price is coming down, capacity is going up and they still have the speed advantage over mechanical hard drives.

Dang it, I just wrote a long post about the long Gevity of a SSD and lost it.

So just want to say the new SSDs have good and long performance using Trim, Leveling and expanded memory included in a SSD. A new SSD can have from 35% to 100% more memory in a drive than its stated capacity. This prevents the drive from slowing as it gets close to maximum capacity. The recent Samsung 950 512Gb drive has a warranty for 5 Years or 400TBW. TBW is Terabytes Written.

Daughter going to college, so we looked around for an Apple laptop since that is what she wanted.

The laptop salesman showed us the MacBook Air, which has no moving parts (i.e. SSD).  He held it about five inches above the display counter and then dropped it.  WHAM!   Then he booted it right up.  "See, it has no moving parts and is almost indestructible."

Gave him my credit card right there.

the NAND flash substrate can sustain a finite number of erase cycles before it becomes unusable. The erase process involves hitting the flash cell with a relatively large charge of electrical energy. This causes the semiconductor layer on the chip itself to degrade a minute amount which, over time, can increase bit-error rates.

all ssd's have tech that attempts to offset this damage, the better/more expensive drives having better tech, but they all eventually become unstable.

today's average ssd lifespan is 5 years.  YMMV

Lol that's awesome. I've always liked the way that macs look but they are overpriced tbh.
