I am planning on buying my first gaming PC tommorw I hope to use it for 3d animation (XSI,3d studio) and gaming (WoW,CoD4/5) I would like to run these with out a sweat..ie 60+ FPS and easy on the multitasking.
here's the prebuilt config here at digitalstorm Core Components: Intel Core i7-920 Processor Intel X58 EVGA Motherboard 3GB 1800MHz System Memory NVIDIA GTX 285 Video Card $1,779 I would like if it came with 4gb ram but I could upgrade that myself later on. here is the other PC i had in mind from another site (i am leaning towards digitalstorm because the other site has a bad rep for long shipping) heres the other site config (for comparing) Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 (4x 3.0GHz/12MB L2 Cache/1333FSB) Processor Asus P5Q3 Intel P45 Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394, Dual PCI-E MB motherboard 4 GB [2 GB X2] DDR3-1333 Ststem memory NVIDIA GTX 295 1792MB w/DVI + TV Out Video Card $1.802 I would like to know if the prebuilt is good enough incomparable with the second build. what can i expect from the prebuilt with FPS? Is the 3gb ram fine or should i consider upgrading to 4? Thanks for any input I am a first time buyer with little gaming pc knowlegde any feedback is helpful. |

Well, the new x58 platform uses a newer, lower voltage ram than the previous DDR3 type did. So far, they are only sold in 3gig kits, so as of right now its either 3, 6, or 12 available, with the board supporting up to 24 i believe .
I would personally go with the Newer build you have configured. It will be alot more upgrade friendly in the future with it being the newest thing out there. Also, the i7 920 is very OC friendly, and you can expect a lot from it. The ftx 295 is the superior card for sure, but the 285 is still 100% kick ass. Edited by Mezzeron - 15 Feb 2009 at 2:11pm |

The Prebuilt config uses Intel's new i7 platform which runs in triple channel memory mode. Basically, you need to install three pairs of memory modules.
In that setup, it has a total of six memory slots, three are full with 1GB sticks.
You can do a 3GB, 6GB, and a 12GB with the new i7 platform.
Honestly, going from 3GB to 4GB on a gaming system isn't even noticeable. Your better off going with the i7, it's faster, new, and best of all a new platform that Intel is supporting.
