I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere - please direct me to the thread(s) if so. Also, please move the thread if necessary.
I'm curious as to what determines the actual overclock frequency in the range offered by DS of 3.3 GHz - 3.9 GHz. I know individual CPUs can vary. Is that the only factor? Also, what are your chances for getting a particular OC (assuming the default options for other possibly relevant components)? How likely is it that you'll get close to 3.9 GHz? Thanks! depends mainly on the cooling, then the chip itself, and a little on the mobo
with a noctua u12p or LC and any of the mobos you are likely to get over 3.6, which after that the speeds impact on youre use is unlikely to change much anyway

The overclock as ender said mainly depends on cooling. With any noctua fan you should get pretty close to 3.9 recetly with noctua fana i have seen 3.8-3.9 but every chip is differant but you will still should be close to 3.9 with a noctua fan

I would notify DS to OC it to 3.9ghz b/c from what I've seen here, many were OC'd to 3.8ghz. I don't recall the last time seeing a 3.9ghz.

Power Supply is also a determining factor. If the power supply has a lot of ripple and noise, that can affect how high you can go, and can affect your stability in the future.
Motherboard is a small part, CPU itself is, and of course cooling. Most if not all i7's can do 3.9GHz with a good air cooler and good power supply. |

My delivery isn't scheduled until Tuesday, but my Stage 7 e-mail shows 3.9GHz.

Thanks everyone! I think I understand now.
As recommended by !ender's guide I will go with the Noctua U12. I'll probably also choose the Corsair 750W TX which is said to be very good as far as ripple is concerned. |

DSO got me to just over 3.8 on an i7 930 with a 750tx, and Noctua U12 combo. I would assume you would at least get that if not higher.
