    Posted: 11 Dec 2018 at 7:19am
Hello - My son is 12, and loves gaming. I purchased the 3rd level Vanquish with Intel i7 & GeForce 1060. He's currently using a 32" TV as a monitor for his Xbox & PS4; although he aspires to be a serious PC Gamer with a YouTube channel, someday. Little did I know that purchasing the i7 (over AMD) with a Ge-Force GPU - I was setting myself up to require the most expensive "Gaming Monitors" on the market.

My question is - do I really need G-Sync - or can I buy the LG Ultrawide 34" monitor with 4ms Response and 75 ghz refresh - for $325 - and enjoy a decent gaming experience. It amazes me that the Digital Storm's display options only offer AMD Adaptive Technology monitors - even when one chooses the top i7 and i9 Intel PCs.

My son is asking for a 3-monitor set-up, and at $500 per 27inch G-Sync monitor - that's more than I just paid for the PC. I can't wrap my head around this and am looking for (permission or) any real-life advice on how to proceed? What single 27" or wide 34" monitor can I buy that will perform well with our new Vanquish i7?

Thanks for your time.

Take a look at 1440p gaming monitors by Alienware, Acer, Benq, etc. I just bought this fabulous curved 34-incher for my new DS system:

Dell Alienware 1900R 34.1",... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0777RY75V?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

I’m a father of two kids in college. I urge you NOT to contemplate spending this kind of money on your 12 year-old’s gaming habit. My son was a talented kart racer and I was very supportive but the test of his commitment was whether he was prepared to get a job and meet me halfway on the expenses. He wasn’t. I saved a fortune and he learned a valuable lesson.

Not to be a spoilsport, but your GTX 1060 is best suited for 1080p gaming. It will struggle at 1440p. I recommend a 24" IPS panel at 1920 X 1080 or 1920 X 1200. IPS is brighter and more colorful than a TN monitor. Google the two types for a breakdown.

Ideal would be a 1920 X 1200 24" if you can. The 1200 means about an inch or inch and a half extra height, and it just looks better. The 1060 will handle the extra pixels IMHO.

This looks like a very good buy to me:

I would agree with Cretae that for the GTX 1060 card, 1920 X 1200 gaming would be a good top end target for monitor resolution, and the Dell Ultrasharp U2415 (24") IPS monitors are pretty reasonably priced right now. 1920 X1200 puts a lot of pixels on screen.

Dell UltraSharps are very good picks.   I’ve had one for years.    Definitely 1080p 24”or 25” are best for gtx 1060.

OK - Here's what I did....

I decided to upgrade the stock GTX 1060 to an RTX 2070 ($300 more), while waiting for to be built by DS.

Then I purchased a (S2716DGR) Dell 27" w/G-Sync for $440 on Amazon.

Thank you all for your advice !
