I apologize in advance if there is already a thread on this. If there is, please point me in the right direction.
Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what to keep on my SSD and what to take off. I've never had more than one hard drive before, so I am a little lost. ![]() |

Keep your OS, and any games/large programs that you use all of the time on there.
An SSD only decreases boot/load speed, so only things that are opened and closed often, and take large load times will be heavilyly affected. |

Ok, thanks. Is there anything pre-loaded on the SSD that I should move off? Like "users" or anything else like that?

Honestly, you can probably keep that on their. I don't know the size of your SSD, but Users likely doesn't contain much data. If it contains large videos, iso files, or something like that, you may want to move them to the HDD, but other than that, it will likely make little difference in space.
Honestly, at that point, it's pretty much a "do whatever you feel like" type of thing. |

Space taken up in the Users folders can be very dependent on certain games and mods applied to games. F'rinstance, it's been a while since i ran it, but i believe Neverwinter Nights 2 used to put a lot of user-specific config files and mod files in their override directory under the Users tree. Just something to watch out for because it isn't always obvious when a program has added something there.
If I may extend this question... what is the prevailing opinion on keeping the Windows pagefile on an SSD or moving it to HDD? |

Pagefile is much less useful on the HDD, but anyone who purchases from DS likely has more than enough RAM, and never needs to use any considerable amount of pagefile space, so I would keep it in the HDD, if you have plenty of RAM.

Always keeps everything that has to do with windows all on the same drive, whether you use pagefile or not, at the end of the day with today's ssds it really does not matter, you got the ssd now put everything from OS on there you should also keep your games and programs on the ssd we have been saying here for years now:
HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage now we can go back and forth about the size of the installed ram on the system and whether pagefile is used or not or we could go back and forth on the MS recommended pagefile size of 1.5/2.0 x installed ram, or well there are many things we can go back and forth on, but at the end I can promise you one thing: With todays good quality SSDs its a nonissue. Now if you got a OCZ ssd or ones like it, then I suggest you worry more about moving all your stuff from that drive cause its just a matter of time before that ssd craps out.

Thanks for the posts everyone.
Just getting ready to install gaming software on the new machine that arrived on Monday! So excellent timing
Config: (Dreadnought base) Intel i7 3820 Quad Core [4.2Ghz OC] ASUS P9X79 Deluxe 16Gb of 1600Mhz DS certified RAM 256Gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD x2 GTX 670 4Gb (SLI) Noctua NH-D14 Air-cool Everything Windows related will end up on the SSD, including all hardware drivers (Roccat mouse/Logitech 110 keyboard, etc.). I'd love to put everything on the SSD but i'm both a pack rat and love to play old games, so the SSD isn't going to hold everything. Especially if I need to drop video/audio editing software there too. So the current solution is a pair of 1Tb Seagate SataIII 7200rpm HDDs in RAID0 attached to the Marvell controller and a 2Tb Barracuda for bulk storage. Don't be surprised to see another thread soon about creating a RAM disk in that 16Gb of RAM...

Simply add a second ssd for games as hdd2 or hdd5 whatever it ends up being for your setup.
hdd is not going to give you the same performance as a ssd in gaming, while raid does boost your large file speeds, its still hdd and suffers from hdd problems. another way is to install games on ssd but then move and store the folder for it on the hdd till you are ready to play, then you simply copy/paste to ssd and when you are done playing that game you can copy/paste back, just make sure your game can do that, not all games can be moved that way.
