One day when my DSO system was booting, I was reading the info as it flew by, and I noticed that the AMI BIOS message says

"USB devices found: 1 keyboard, 2 mice, and 3 hubs".

That struck me as strange, since I only have one mouse attached to the system, so I went into Device Manager, where I found two entries under "Mice and other pointing devices"! Both are titled "HID-compliant mouse" and are identical. If I delete one, my mouse stops working. If I delete the other, mouse still works, but next time I reboot, I still get the "2 mice" BIOS message and, surprise, the Device Manager once again shows the two "HID-compliant mouse" devices.

I have tried to Google this problem, but all of the results were about people who really wanted to attach two mouses to their system, for multi-boxing and the like. Although this does not seem to be causing a problem for me, and I do not consider it to be a DSO-related problem, it is still incorrect, not to mention puzzling, so I thought I would post here and see if any of you knowledgeable and helpful folks could shed any light on this situation.

Strange....Assuming like Tidgxor said, nothing else plugged in, in Device Manager right click one of the entries and Disable not Uninstall and see what happens..

Might not even be worth messing with.  Not sure.

There are two USB connectors plugged into the back of my system box (and none into the front, before anyone asks). One is a corded mouse, and the other is the cord from my Dell LCD monitor, which I assume would count as a hub. I have a cordless keyboard plugged into the USB connector in the monitor. I assume(d) the other two hubs listed in the BIOS message are inside the system unit. This would make sense since there are USB connectors on both the back and the front of the system unit.

Which Dell monitor do you have? I ask because one of my two Dell monitors causes a USB mouse to be seen in device manager. I have never figured out why, but I'm guessing it has to do with the integrated USB firmware of the monitor. Its never caused me any issue though.

I had a similar mystery. My startup screen would read 2 keyboards, 1 mouse.  Took me a while to realize the number pad on my Razer Naga was being read as a keyboard. Do you have something on your keyboard that could be read as a mouse? Touchpad or other pointing device?

Hmm, I don't have that monitor, though both of mine are UltraSharps, though only one of them creates the 2nd mouse. EdHRPh brings up a good point in regards to keyboards, mine always shows as 2 keyboards in the BIOS. I can't say for sure what exactly it is, but my guess is that someone you have plugged in is causing a false signature for a USB mouse at the driver or firmware level. Unless its causing you an issue (or just really hate it Big%20Smile) I wouldn't worry about it. If you are determined to get rid of it, a good way to start would be to unplug USB devices one at a time while refreshing the device manager (restarts might be needed for full effect) to see what its linked to.
