Where do I find my Windows OS activation code?

I wanted to reinstall my copy of Windows Vista but I can't seem to find the activation code that Microsoft normally requires you to enter when installing Windows.  I looked through all of the documentation that came with my computer and can't seem to find it.  Do I even need it to reinstall my OS?  Any help would be much appreciated.

should be a sticker side of your pc or you can just run Belarc Advisor and it will tell you what it is.
