xp or vista? I have heard a lot of bad things about vista. I have also heard good things about vista. And then comes the question of vista 32bit or vista 64bit? I heard more problems with 64bit but you can get more memory. Or stick with xp.

For me it came down to if I wanted DX10 or not. My final answer was yes, so that meant Vista.
64 bit is probably a safe bet for most everything nowadays, but I wouldn't use it with anything under 4gig ram. If you want maximum compatibility just stick with 32 bit and 2gig ram. |

DX10 was a flop (hilarious how we won't see any full DX10 games until 10.1... but LAWL our 8800s aren't 10.1 hardware).

Just ordered my new system and decided to go Vista 64 with 4 gigs of ram. I mostly game on my computer so I hope I made the right choice. Vista had a lot of problems in the beginning mostly dealing with drivers. Now most of the bugs are worked out and the system is stable. New games will support dx 10 and you can only get that with vista. From spending many hours on different forums I see vista 64 will use more resources so 4 gigs is needed but games will load a lot faster and should play smoother.

DX 10.1 will have minimal impact on games (arguably DX 10 will have minimal impact too though).
Vista 64 is a fine choice, and if you ever have a problem with it just call up DS. |

You'll want to go with all of the hotfixes for wista (theres a link on here somewhere, also on Nvidia site). These still dont solve all the problems. Sometimes, painful as it is, you'll have to turn off DX10 in the graphics menu or you'll get a "video driver failed, but recovered" error. This is extremely frustrating.. CoH: opposing fronts is one I know for sure. Also (this is assuming you'll be using nvidia gpu(s)), you'll need to tweak the 3d settings in the nvidia control panel to get the right combination for your system. for me this includes using alt. frame rendering 1 and texture quality "high". also single display performance mode.. best of luck, the OS is actually easy to use, but the bugs will drive you mad sometimes...

Flat out, which one is better? XP.
If you want DX10, you have to go to Vista. |

I'm an avid CoH/CoV gamer...Liberty, Triumph and Victory servers. I went with a 8800 GTX OC, and Vista 64bit w/4G of RAM. I'm new to performance machines. Untill now I've always gottne off the shelf PC's. How much of a hassle is it going to be to get it running? I can barely pull 5fps right now when I'm in combat on minumum settings...but I'm sure my new DS machine will put all that behind me. What steps will I need to take to avoid prolonged issues getting started with gaming. Primarily for CoH/CoV and WoW...but also I wanted to get into Tabula Rasa and Hellgate London.

I'm a vista fan. I recommend Vista for gaming, for DX10 if nothing else. SP1 came out recently and it manages to take care of most the bugs you would encounter while gaming. The biggest bug though is still a problem. The NVLD or NDLK (or NVDD, or NVDLL, or various others) errors from the nvidia drivers. However, neither OS is safe as both people using XP and Vista are experiencing the problem. No matter what OS you go with (Linux and Leopard excluded) you are going to run into bugs and problems. That's just the nature of computing. (Please keep in mind my exclusions =P) I say go with Vista 32 bit. You can always upgrade to a 64 bit edition later on if you feel it's needed, and you won't have to lose any files or saves. Though you will have to update all of your drivers, and certain games will run better if you re-install after the upgrade. (Crysis for example)
