I'm no expert when it comes to memory so anybody that knows the answer to the following question please respond.

I'm curious what would be the better option. I use my computer for gaming so please keep that in mind. I am unsure of how much you would notice the differance in MHz vs having 2GB more. Any info is greatly appreciated.

1) 2GB DDR2 Corsair at 800MHz XMS2

or

2) 4GB DDR2 Corsair at 667MHz

Thanks,
Andrew

Without boring you with details, the short quick answer is
Option #1 for running a 32 bit OS (i.e.Vista).

Let me be the first (crap!) second person to tell you that getting more than 2 Gig of RAM doesn't make much sense unless you are running a 64-bit operating system. This is because 32-bit OSs can only address 4 Gig and some of that address space is taken up by the RAM on your video card and other memory mapped devices. You could use an 8800 GTX 768 video card and still have address space for over 3 Gig of system RAM, but you'd still b throwing away 3/4 of a Gig, and few if any games would really make use of the extra memory.

Performance wise, 667 MHz RAM is fast enough to run at full speed on any FSB up to 1333 MHz. Most folks feel that going with at least 800 MHz memory is a real good idea because it allows some room for overclocking the CPU & FSB without actually overclocking the RAM. 800 MHz RAM can run on a 1600 MHz FSB without overclocking the memory.

So, unless you're getting Vista 64 get the 2 Gig of 800 MHz RAM.

Thank you for the responses. I will be getting the 32-bit version of Vista so will take your advice and stick with the 800MHz 2GB option. Again I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Andrew
