So, I've been doing some research and am considering upgrading the memory on my DS rig. After said research, I find myself a little more informed and a litte more confused than I was before starting off. Wondering if someone can answer a few questions.
1) Given a constact speed, I would assume that lower timings would always be preferable. That being said, in researching 4gb of 1066 DDR2, I find 5-5-5-15 and 7-7-7-20, why would anyone buy the 7-7-7-20, isn't it obvioulsy inferior?
2) What is more imporant to performance, speed or timings? Buffalo FireStix (just happened to see that brand) has 800mhz with 4-4-4-12, would that be better than 1066 5-5-5-15?
3) What does the PC2 8400, there are other PC2 values for DDR2 wither other speeds.
4) Anyone have any suggestions for pairing with a 2.2g Phenom 2?
5) I don't really care (or know how) to OC the memory, but in reading it seems I may have to adjust timings/voltage to get 1066 to register. Will this require much tweaking, or just setting numbers to the exact mfg specs?
Thanks much for any replies.

1. price or lack of knowledge.
2. speed but timing can't be too far off. 3. PC8400 ÷ 8 = 1050 (aka 1066MHz ram) 4. match what ever ram you have now. 5. enter the ram timings in the bios. 6. don't bother upgrading your ram, you will never notice the difference, you would be wasting your money, been there done that, wasted my money already Edited by DST4ME - 24 Feb 2009 at 5:20pm |

Thanks DST, I only have 2GB now, so thinking I'd go up to 4, and for > $100 I'm not terribly worried. I might get the Ballistic Tracer for a little bling.
Coincidentally, I found this article yesterday after posting, I think the principles are the same for DDR2, 3, etc in case anyone else is interested.

I have a memory question as well....
I had DS put 3 gigs in, and figured I'd upgrade to more myself a little cheaper. They put 3 gigs of corsair TR3X3G1600C9D DDR3, with 9-9-9-24 timing.
I can't find that anywhere, but can find this: TR3X3G1600C8D, with 8-8-8-24 timing.
If I mix the two, will it just all fall in line with the 9-9-9-24 timing?
Also, if I were to put 6 more gigs in, rather then 3 (found a good deal on zipzoomfly for 6gigs), I'm a little confused as to where I would install them.
This is on an EVGA X58...currently the 3 gigs are in slots 1,3,5...would I put the new 6gig set in 2,4, 6? The manual for the board is a little confusing.

there is no point to go over 6GB, if you install the slow ram it all will run at the slowest time, best thing to do is buy 6GB 3 x 2GB and replace the current 3GB with the new 6GB

One thing to be mildly concerned with here is that both of you are entering into the realm of a 64bit OS. 32bit windows can not access more than 3.~gigs of ram, including your GPU, so if you're upgrading your ram, make sure you upgrade your windows to 64bit aswell or you reeeally won't notice the difference.
And I agree with DST4ME, when upgrading RAM I find it best to do a full replace, chucking the old sticks, and buying a full kit of new ones. Kits of multiple sticks (2,3,4,6) are tested together by the manufacturer to ensure they work together. I've even seen reviews on Newegg from people who ordered two of the exact same 2-stick kits and they failed to work together. So the lesson here is if you're erring on the side of caution and you wanna buy 4 sticks...buy a 4-stick kit.
