Placing this here in hardware, rather then in general discussion. I need the local sound expert widdlecat!

I need new speakers! I'm running an old cambridge soundworks setup, and its a good 5 years old at this point if not more.

Suggestions?

And if possible, a few suggestions starting from low to high, so I can work from a low budget to high budget?
Sarah

I have the Logtitech X-540's, they aren't too bad but the base isnt too amazing unless you crank the sub up. Over all for the $80 they cost im happy with them.

I think right around 80 dollars is my budget, I dont really want to spend more then that. I do require it to be a 5.1 system though, nothing less. What ya need on Monday Samael?

I would go with PatrickB;s suggestion then.

And on Monday I would like to know what GPUs I am getting as in what vendor the Zotechs or EVGA, I would prefer the EVGA so if I can get them still that would be good. Thats about it. If I think of anything else will let you know Ouch

PS told you I was finiky, and forgetful Ouch Locked myself out of my car by leaving the keys inside the car and locking it. It was not fun getting my cousin to drive me an hour and a half to get my spares Wink Just an example of forgetfulness

I'm at a loss at such a tight budget regarding audio. It's very difficult to get high quality sound reproduction at anything under $200 for a 2.1. I dunno about 5.1 since I've only dealt with home theater gear where each speaker cost at least $300 each. The only luck I've had with really good sound from pc speakers are my Monsoon planar media 9's. They used to retail for $200 or $300 for the 2.1 set, but I believe they are out of business now. My guess is they got shut down for patent infringement for the planar magnetic speakers that Magnepan's Jim Winey owns the rights to. So far, I really haven't heard any decent pc speakers other than these. Let's face it, any speaker with a plastic enclosure is gonna sound like crap. It's not stiff enough to prevent resonances within the audible range, so I would save up for decent speakers even though they cost a lot more. The other option is to grab some decent headphones. It's much easier to get good sound from headphones than from speakers.

P.S For your budget, I would definitely consider Grado or Sennheiser headphones for the best quality sound, although they only offer stereo sound. There are some surround headphones on the market that apparently do an excellent job of giving audio location cues. Mebbe you can check a pair out and see if you like them.

Thanks for the advice everyone, and widdlecat! I'm going to go with the logitech speakers I mentioned above, especially since I already have a good headset. I do occasionally listen to music, and once in a great while watch movies, but for the most part, I game on the system. So I think they will be good. What I would really like to do is go with Bose at some point, but its just too far out of my budget unfortunately.

Thanks though!
Sarah

Sarah please heed our advice, do not under any circumstances go with BOSE. I will personally help you find a much better system for the price you would pay for the BOSE.
