would i be able to play games coming out shortly, such as COD4 and Crysis, and what fps can be expected on these, also what fps can this set up get on counterstrike source

also, i just want to check that its possible to upgrade the sound card, as at the moment i do not have enough money to get a better one for this setup, so wish to improve it at later date, as im a producer of music, thanks.

main setup -

Power Supply: 560W Silverstone (Silent Edition)
Processor: AMD Athlon X2 4200+ 2.2GHz (Dual Core) (1 MB Cache) w/HyperTransport
Motherboard: Asus M2N-E SLI (nForce 5 series SLI Chipset)
Memory: 2GB DDR2 Corsair at 667MHz (Dual Channel)
Network Card: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections)
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 8500GT 512MB (By: eVGA) (PCI-Express)
Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic

If you plan on using any resolution higher than 1024x1024... that setup won't work for games like Crysis.

Games like Crysis might be playable depending on your resolution and settings but don't expect anything over 30 FPS =\ If you want high settings or 1024x1024+, don't expect anything higher than 9.

But for CSS, you should expect to see around 40 FPS on avg with low res & settings.

And don't get Vista Basic.. either go with Premium or back to XP. (Basic is absolutely useless)

Ahh right, thanks,

I'm surprised at only 40 fps for css, that's pretty lame to be honest, especially if its low resolution and settings, atm on my crappy dell dimension with integrated graphics card i can get up to 60 fps on some maps, usually around 20- 25 though ^^, how would i improve the system in terms of better gaming?

Upgrading the GPU would improve the performance the most...

Nvidia and AMD will be releasing new mainstream cards soon (within the next week). Both will perform really well and are rumored to be priced at ~$170 and ~$220... if you can't afford that much then aim for atleast a 8600 (around $120).

Ahh ryt, thanks, i will consider busting out  an extra £25 for the 8600, but first, please tell me the difference between the 8500 and 8600, i searched on the internet prices and found i could get 8500 for £25 and 8600 for £50, so would it be better to get two 8500 and use an SLI bridge or just get a 8600, thanks

8600 or equivalent would be better than SLI.

The 8500 has 12 stream processors and uses DDR2 memory while the 8600 has 32 stream processors and uses DDR3 memory.

This is what you should expect in CSS with a 8600..

Ahh wow, thats the sort of thing i need to see, is there a link to where you got that? I might even get a bit more than that cos currently i caan't play hl2 but can play css at a crappy standard, so maybe its less demanding than hl2, hopefully :D.

Also, how do you think the same system but with a geoforce 8600 gt will be for playing cod4 and crysis?

I mean i wouldn't mind turning down detail and AA at all

If you need more, just search google for 8600 benchmarks or reviews

I would say a 8600 in Crysis at low resolution/setting would give you avg FPS of ~25

If you want high details or 30+ FPS, you going to have to invest in a GeForce 8800GT or Radeon 38xx.

I'm confused, how comes the older 7600 gt model is outperforming the 8600 gt? :S in these benchmark reviews

For Obliv: The 7600 was unable to run HDR and AA at the same time so those numbers for the 7600 is without AA.

And for the others, it's because of the early driver issues.

Also, going back to an earlier point, why do you reccomend going back to xp if i'm only getting vista basic, also what advantages are there to be had from premium?

thanks

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsVista/vista-which-version.html

There's no point in getting Vista Basic when it performs worst than XP and when it lacks so many of the new features of Vista...
