Hi Everyone,

I thought it might be useful to start a thread that will help us setup and trouble shoot Windows 10.

To get us started here is a Tip that I find useful.

The Windows 10 search function on the Task Bar searches the computer and the Internet by default. Most of the results are Internet related. Most of the time I am looking for solutions on my computer and the Internet items just mucks it up. I changed the search default to search my computer only. This way I can easily find the many settings in Windows 10. It seems that some of the settings are really hard to find.

How to change the search function on the Task Bar settings:

1. Left click on the search Icon on the Task Bar. This opens the search window.

2. On the top left of the search window click the Settings Icon. This opens the search settings.

3. Switch the slider button: "Search online and include Web results" to Off.

Now when you use the search function it will only show results from Windows 10 on your computer. If you want Web results, use the search on Edge or IE or the browser of your choice.

I only add this because I don't have a search icon, just the search box. This can be changed by right clicking on the box or icon, hovering over the "Search >" and choosing either:

Hidden
Show search icon
Show search box

Just my 2¢, back to your regularly scheduled helpfulness.

Hi Snaike,

That is different than my Task Bar setup. I have a magnifying glass Icon rather than the window. The Icon is an option I selected. It does work as I stated if you have the Icon.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Frank.... the only way, for me, to turn off Bing search and just search pc, is to disable Cortana.   Then the slider shows. If I want Cortana then I just select My Stuff.

Hi bprat22,

I forgot about Cortana. I don't use it so I never considered it. So many ways to configure Win-10. Thanks for reminding me.

I had Yahoo hijack my home page on IE. Had a heck of a time getting rid of it. That has been a long standing problem with Yahoo. They convinced me never to use them.

Frank.... Yeah, the more I use Windows 10 the more I like it. An adjustment after so many years on Win7, but I love something new to get a handle on.

Cortana is fun.   Reminds me of my brother's Amazon Echo.

Here is another tip for those who don't like the little check boxes on the Desktop Icons in Win-10.

1. Open File Explorer. I have File Explorer on my start page but if you can't find it just type File in the search box and it will bring up a list.

2. Check on "File Explorer". Opens the File Explorer Window.

3. The File Explorer window will come up on the "Home" page.

4. At the top/left of File Explorer check "View".

5. The View page will open. Look at the top, on the right side of the page and locate a check box titled:
"Item Check Boxes" Uncheck that box and you won't see the little box on your Icons anymore.

Not a big deal but someone might find it useful. Of course if you don't use a desktop with Icons it is not a problem for you.

Hi bprat22,

I think those check boxes have been around since Win-7. It took a bit to figure out with Win-10. I found them really aggravating.

Please be sure to let me know how you like the ScreenDr.
