Windows 7 boxed and ready for pre-orders

Official pricing revealed

In addition to the pictures of boxes for its upcoming Windows 7 that will hit retail on October 22nd, Microsoft has finally revealed the official price for each version of its new and shiny OS. Limited pre-order apparently starts tomorrow, June 26th and we are quite sure that these will be quite hard to get but not in lines as for iPhone 3Gs.

Those who already have Vista and XP will need to give the great and mighty Microsoft a sum of US $119.99, $199.99 or $219.99 for Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate upgrade and those that want a full retail disc will need to cough up US $199.99, $299.99 or $319.99 respectively.

Those lucky ones that will be able to pre-order their copy tomorrow will get it at $49.99 for Home Premium and US $99.99 for Professional. Unfortunately, these are limited and are expected to sell out like hot cakes.

In order to grab some customers, manufacturers like HP and probably even Sony will offer free upgrades from Vista to Windows 7 for systems sold after tomorrow and we are pretty sure that the rest of the bunch will join soon. Guys at Engadget are giving away 100 codes that guarantee a pre-order spot as a part of its recession antidote campaign, so you might want to check it out here.

EVERYTHING YOU HAVE!!!  Um I mean...uh...why don't you just give me you credit card?  No?  Ok, how 'bout you win the lottery (((which in NJ is up to like $80,000,000!!!))) and then give me $1,000,000?  Does that sound good?

(If you actually play this game, MegaMillions, for some reason, and win with the numbers I gave you, I really do expect to see a piece of your newly acquired dough!! THAT GOES FOR EVERYONE!!)  lol although its not very likely...sadly...Wink

Just ordered mine.  The only problem is they did not say if the pre-order was 32 or 64 bit.  I sure hope it is 64 or my old pc will get a new look.

well why don't you email/call and double check, you don't want to pay for a 64-bit then get stuck with a 32-bit

By the way according to the pre-order the disc will be able to upgrade you to 64 or 32 bit.  Thank God

I am pre-ordering soon, anyone know where I can do that for Canada? Or do I have to get the American version being that my Vista is American.

And e06028 thanks for clearing that 64bit thing up, I was wondering the same thing.

O and hey everyone :D

With the economy the way it is everyone is raising prices to make a little more profit. Microsoft always looks for ways to raise prices, they know that sooner or later you have to upgrade and with no competition you are at their mercy.  In any case the $49 price for upgrade is still available for now, that is a good price.  You can get it at Amazon by clicking this link.

I ran the upgrade advisor and it said I could upgrade from Vista 64 Home Premium to windows 7 premium or ultimate without reloading my applications but if I chose a different version such as Windows 7 Professional I would have to do a clean install.  I want the Professional version since it allows the virtual XP etc.

Has anybody else saw this as an issue or know anything about it??

Onkel_Ken, good to see you , some things are different for each version so if you have home it can only be upgraded to home, if you have pro, it can only be upgraded to pro, ultimate can only be upgraded to ultimate.

to be honest I would prefer to do a fresh install, its the best way to avoid any headaches, I remember the XP upgrade to Vista created lot of problems.

Thanks for the info DST4ME.  I went ahead and pre-ordered the Windows 7 Premium at $49.99 to be shipped to my home.  With tax and shipping it was $58.40 which is still a pretty decent discount from the base normal price of $119.99 before tax and shipping.  They also mentioned they won't charge the credit card till it ships at the end of October.

I am looking forward to seeing how it compares to Vista 64.  Most people I talk to say Vista 64 is ineffecient and slow but I have never noticed that.  It has always ran very fast for me.  Maybe having a DS Beast 920 overclocked to 3.59 with a 295 and 6 GB makes even bad software seem good.  Angry

anybody that can tell the speed difference between XP/vista and win7 is not human, you will see when you upgrade there is no speed difference to be noticed.

I never noticed it and 64 can calculate faster then x 32bit anyways, so some thing are actually faster, not that we will notice that either

I have been told if you want to fresh install, you stick in the win7 dvd and when it ask where you OS is or vista is, you can just pop in the vista DVD and win7 will do a fresh install of win7

Windows 7 simply adds features to Vista and renames it.  That doesn't make it bad, but if someone tells you Vista sucks, then so does W7.  Since SP1, Vista has been great.  As will Windows 7 be.

One way to get Windows 7 for free.........buy a new computer from DS!

LoL - I do not think I would advertise that fact on the internet.  Does your company pay Microsoft for each copy?  If so, then it's only your company that you are stealing from.  If it is a license your company has with Microsoft, then Microsoft will come after you, something you probably should try to avoid.
