If I go ahead and use the Windows 7 coupon that came with my new DS computer and upgrade from Widows Vista 64 bit to Windows 7 will I loose all my settings and configs? Or will I retain all?

Good question...How do you know which version is the upgrade...or do you get to choose when you perform the upgrade? I also forgot to ask how the upgrade would affect new files and folders specifically game files and folders if I upgraded? Or would I have to reinstall everything again?

If you upgrade you should be able to keep everything the same as they are now but upgrades can bring trouble, a fresh install is always recommended over upgrade.
if you have a 64bit you get to upgrade to a 64bit. win7 is coming with all version in both 32bit and 64bit. |

for just files, I just drag and drop in to an external or another drive.
but I do recommend you clone your os HDD, so if something goes wrong you go back to where you were real easy and quick. Edited by DST4ME - 22 Oct 2009 at 6:20pm |

So if I am going to install Windows 7....then the best way to save EVERYTHING on my C drive is to clone the drive...which I can do onto my secondary drive?
I just want to make sure that the procedure is correct as posted by DST. |

I also just noticed that my version of Vista Home Premium 64bit does
not have SP1 or SP2 installed...in fact it says that the OS service pack is a Trial
Version??
Or at least when I run Everest that's what comes up... Operating System Properties OS Name Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium OS Kernel Type Multiprocessor Free (64-bit) OS Version 6.0.6002 (Vista RTM) OS Service Pack [ TRIAL VERSION ] Should this be a concern?...neither service pack comes up in my update notifications.... |

Is cloning your drive kind of like making your own recovery disc?

the reason we are cloning your drive is so that if anything goes wrong you have a back of how your system is now.
cloning is like duplicating, you are basically duplicating the HDD. run windows update, if your windows is upto date then everest is reporting it wrong. the drive you clone to has to be disconnected before windows boots up again, otherwise it will not be bootable and you will not be able to boot to windows using it. so basically make the clone, then check and make sure the clone works then do a fresh install of win7 on the original HDD. |

so cloning the hardrive to my second drive is the smartest thing to do? How do you do a clean install if you are doing the electronic upgrade? Is it even possible or am I just screwed. I got the deal for students and it gives you an electronic upgrade. Should I order the disc upgrade option too? Its like 13 bucks but I just want to get the OS up and running correctly

I can get either the Pro Version or the Home Premium Version from this upgrade... I have no idea if the difference is worth the hassle does anyone. I have to do a fresh install if I do the pro version. What will I need to do to make sure I dont lose anything?

Well Ace...I believe from everything I've read...that the best
option is to clone it....your primary drive with your operating
system...to an external drive....because the external needs to be
disconnected before you reboot.
I don't know how that is done if you want to clone it to an installed second drive. As far as the electronic full install....don't know anything about that either. For a full install I would think that waiting for the disc would be the safest option. I think you can only upgrade from similar operating systems...in other words if you have Vista Premium you can only upgrade to Windows 7 Premium...if you want the Windows 7 Pro you're looking at a full install. I don't want to give you any bum scoop so you may want to check with either Harleyman or DST4ME. And as far as saving anything or everything...I always save files and folders I want to keep on an external hard drive. Good luck! |

thanks man I appreciate it. I just ordered the Home premium version. Did some research and the differences aren't enough for me to got through the hassle of. I like Home premium Ihave now so I'[m backing up my files and then upgrading using the eletronic upgrade option. I also ordered the dick kit which is basically a boot disc from what I gathered from its description. Its just a backup disc. This should work for me Thanks for the help man

If you don't perform one of the below upgrade options, then you will have to perform a fresh install...

Acronis also works well as a normal file backup app (I use it like that), though it isn't as intuitive as the cloning function. |

if you clone the vista to an external and make sure that the external is off anytime the pc boots to windows, then yes your vista will be saved(cloned) as it was and you can pop it in your rig anytime you want, it can be like having 2 OS, win7 on one hdd and vista on the other.

So it's OK if I use my cloned external hard drive with Vista to roll back my primary hard drive with Win 7 to have my primary now boot up with Vista...
Is that correct DST? The reason I am asking is that I think I would rather do a complete fresh install of Win 7....but I may have to wait for a couple of weeks to purchase the complete version so I would like to just have my C drive boot up into Vista while I wait. I'm having some minor issues with Punkbuster which will not allow me to get into online games...and after 2 days of troubleshooting I am unable to resolve those issues. Thank you. |

you can clone to external, but I'm not sure if you can boot off of the external, but you can restore from it.
as long as external is not on when any version of windows boots up. what kind of a problem were you having? how was it not letting you get into online games? |

AVG and regular Windows firewall which shows that it allows
Punkbuster A and B . I ran the game with AVG uninstalled and I still
get kicked and the same error msg.

Already tried that...no dice...must be a conflict with something...I even uninstalled the security updates but nothing seems to work....so for now I'm just going to roll back to Vista for now.
Appreciate the help. |

Thanks DST...by the way....that Acronis that you recommended worked
great...rolling back to Vista was easy and quick...saved all my
settings and configs. I'd rather use that then the recovery disc that
came with the computer.
