I've been using Windows 8 Pro since it came out a few days ago and am really liking it. Here are just a few of my initial reactions to the new operating system.
Pros: I've noticed slightly faster boot up times. It looks and feels modern. Upgrade offer is cheap ($15 or $40). Took only about 10 minutes to upgrade, and all of my programs transfered with no problem. Metro is very useful. Lots of touchscreen support. Can use in "Windows 7 mode" when you don't need the other features. Lots of new features. Cons: Desktop version of Chrome is not working correctly now; metro version works fine though. In my opinion, unless you're using a touchscreen device there's nothing too revolutionary with Windows 8. It's mainly just a much sleeker version of Windows 7. However, because it's only $40 to upgrade from any Windows 7 version to Windows 8 Pro, I think it's definitely worth it. Has anybody else upgraded to 8, and if so what are your thoughts on the new OS? Edit: Figured out backlighting issue. Edited by DomTheBomb - 12 Nov 2012 at 6:02pm |

I had upgraded. I had to downgrade again, because it was incompatible with the compiler that I was using for a C++ course. I agree that once you get to the desktop, it is all good, and if you alter it to skip Metro and add a start button, it can be quite good, but I think that the need to do that is good enough reason not to upgrade (along with said compiler issues). Others people will probably upgrade with no problems (and be happy with it), but it isn't worth the cost to me (which is kind of sad, because it's free).

Hi DomTheBomb and Orange7,
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with us. The more feedback we get the better for everyone. Orange7, have you reported your problem to Microsoft. I think they might be interested in a problem like this. Win-7 has been so stable for me and I don't remember ever having a blue screen or frozen machine due to the operating system. I think and hoping that Win-8 is going to be the first vintage of Windows that works as a new release. I think Win-8 is going to give us a great way to keep our cell, tablet and computer synced to together. My wife has a heck of a time with her cell phone but does pretty good with Win 7. She will be getting a new Win Phone 8 cell when they come available. Which is happening right about now. I see some good things happening for Microsoft. They are taking a chance with their business plan but in the long run it is going to be a smart move. Frank |

Tell us how that turns out. I was considering the Lumia 920 or the HTC 8x as two of the options for my next one, but I wasn't sure about Windows Phone 8, so any feedback would be nice.

I currently use windows 7, 8 and Linux Mint.
8 does perform well, it does look nice, its a little bit of a change and really seems to "mask" what is going on behind the scenes. In blunt truth, if you are a normal user, who doesn't do anything illegal (which you never should) or do not mind the store/social aspect of the new OS it is a solid upgrade for you, not to mention, it features things like secure boot, which is always good. It is quick, responsive and is mostly supported by major vendors everywhere, best of all unlike certain computers "from outer space" half of the priority hardware doesn't stop working if you buy from Digital Storm. So glad to be a customer. Oh, and win8 is supposed to support native "themeing" in the future. Regards. |

Very subtle. Also, what version of Mint? I think my favorite was Lisa (Low resources, same classy feel), but I really like the look and feel of Maya, even though it is a little resource heavy for Linux. Edited by Orange7 - 03 Nov 2012 at 4:00pm |

How does windows 8 affect playing games? Are there installation issues or anything else? And as far as steam goes what are there any problems downloading, installing and playing games that way?

Since I got the keyboard lighting fixed I haven't had any problems using Windows 8 with any of my games or programs, even the ones from Steam.
It does make me wish my display was a touchscreen though... |

Give it a few months, it'll get better with additional Direct3D features. Fingers crossed for asynchronous multi-GPU memory.
