What are everyone's thoughts on Windows 8?

I am pretty much set on getting an ODE Level 4 V2. Just working on the timing of everything and was wondering if I should order now or wait for W8. I know I can upgrade for like $40 to W8, but seems like it would easier to just get W8 from the start.

My other thought was new OS always seem buggy, so perhaps, best to get W7 let all the problems get fixed and then upgrade like in December.

You know your games and all will work with Windows 7 on the great machine you're getting. I'd get the machine now with windows 7 and wait on upgrading to windows 8 till you read that everyone is loving it or at least waiting till the first service pack comes out. When it comes to upgrading windows....I always remember what a dog Vista was and that alone will always make me wait before rushing to upgrade.

Windows 8 is almost the exact same as windows 7, but with a Metro start screen and no start button.

I wouldn't recommend waiting, or even getting, windows 8. It is more of a hassle than it is worth.

Windows 7 will last you for a good long while, beyond the life of the machine most likely.

I was reading MaximumPC and I had to laugh reading this comment from usmckozmo on the RTM of Windows 8 announcement:

I've noticed a pattern of Microsoft releasing good versions of Windows every other cycle:

98 = Good
ME = Crap
XP = Good
Vista = Crap
7 = Good
8= ....

LOL

Haha yeah I've read that before. Big%20Smile

The problem is that it leaves out a few versions, but still funny observation.

I will have my copy installed August 17th. The day after SA can download it. ;) I am running the last build right now and must say I do like it. Metro is okay, but I don't use it as I spend most of my time in desktop mode.

I heard you could update your version of Windows if you bought your PC after june 2012... I don't know if my ODE will qualify as a "retail computer". Any clues?

I have the cards installed into my machine. I was going to bring it into work to do the install as i can't upgrade from Windows Ultimate to Win 8 Enterprise. Just been busy with work so haven't had a time to do it yet. Will let everyone know though.

I've got to disagree with you, buddy. I've used the consumer preview, developer preview, and Windows 8 Professional, and I still can't live without a start button. I have hacked it in each case to give me one (and to remove Metro), and after that it has been fine, but it wasn't worth the hassle.

I'm using 8 as I type this, I have no real issues with it. Earlier on in the development cycle I was making a lot of changes, but I've since started using it fresh out of the box (aside from a few minor tweaks that are no more advanced than what was intended for the average user to accomplish) and its grown on me.

Its going to be interesting to see how the larger sectors respond. I also wonder how much, if any, the server licensing will increase.

While I understand there is no "Start Button" but that's the whole point of a new OS. Why keep making minor changes? Let's start with something new and fresh, once Metro is properly setup, it does help improve productivity.

We all find it difficult to adjust to something we've done for so long a certain way, but, it might be worth giving it a shot for a while.

I've read a lot of the reviews on my favourite tech boards and pretty much understand both sides of the "debate".

I don't have a touch screen monitor and so it comes down to a simple decision....if I install Win 8, will I see a respectable increase in gaming power or a significant increase in stability over the OS I have now? (Win 7)

Having a cute GUI doesn't impress me.

I'm happy with the performance and stability of Win 7. If I see a lot of gamers and my tech friends promoting Win 8 as being much more powerful and stable.....I'll get in line and throw some money at Microsoft. This release is going to be a "wait and see what others think first" before I jump in. Just my humble opinion.

i don't know which one it was but when i was living at home we had i think windows 95 or 98 and had it until i think 2008 or 9. Oldest OS in probably history while everyone was using ME or XP.

From what I remember, early benchmarks showed that Windows 8 was faster during general usage, but lacked the graphics and gaming speed of Windows 7. It seems to have closed the gap on that to some extent with the official releases, and now they alternate places in most tests.

Agreed. Have you read the November issue of MaximumPC? They did a really comprehensive review including all the benchmarks (page 32). I think they did a very fair review because even Goron Mah Ung wrote an editorial (page 7) on how he was approaching the new OS.

So far I have been playing BorderLands 2. I haven't noticed any slow downs so that's good. I will look at playing GW2 next to see how it plays.

I switched from BL2 back to TOR to test an MMO. I do see some slow downs and crashes. Not sure if it's the game or because of Windows 8. I am going to uninstall the game and my Nvidia drivers as i did an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Hopefully this will clear those issues up. So far so good though. Boots up faster compared to Windows 7.

@Alex

The real question is, "How much longer will we be able to order machines with WIN 7 installed on them?" My original DSO machine just turned 5 years old. With a few upgrades along the way, I'm still pretty satisfied with it, but lately I've had the urge to get a shiny new one. WIN 7's demise could force me to pull the trigger sooner rather than later.

There will not be an option between Windows 7 and Windows 8? I am sure DS did their homework and would not only offer a subpar OS. Maybe it will be worth looking into, though it seems the vast majority of people out there(as far as surveys go) are not wanting to upgrade to Windows 8.
