In the notification area of my taskbar, I have a "safely remove hardware" icon for my SATA HDD. How can I get rid of it? I only have the one HDD installed and it's internal.

Probably ought to sticky this if it hasn't been already somewhere.  This has been discussed.  It's a glitch in Vista.  It doesn't hurt anything to have it there so I wouldn't worry about it.  I've got it on mine too.

If you enable the "Hide inactive Icons" setting on your toolbar, you'll eventually see it go away... hidden.

In theory, SATA drives are hot swappable (you can unplug a drive while the machine is running without causing too many sparks).  That's why the option exists. As I recall, enabling this feature was an option when I loaded the SATA controller drivers for my motherboard. I haven't seen any place to turn it off once you install it.

Do you hate it enough to reinstall the moboard drivers from the EVGA disc?

A quick search produced this thread that may be useful.  Several suggestions included:

Exactly what I've said.  Mine is not showing right now because it's hidden on the toolbar by activating that setting.

Alright.  I'm just a research nerd, so I find it but can't vouch for it's usefulness or safety ...

Mental note:  Should remember next time that I have tinyurl extension installed.

I just checked and no "nvada" listing in my registry, and I have this same issue with that icon.  So this information may be outdated.  Sorry.

Nvidia Media Shield puts that icon down there. If you do not want that icon down there (for your hdd), uninstall your nvidia chipset drivers, then reinstall, but do not install media shield + forceware network manager.

You WILL still get that icon everytime you connect an external usb hdd and removable drives though.

I found the solution there and did the regedit. It solved my problem. Looks nice and neat again.  BTW, Duke, I tried your solution first and it didn't help in my case. I'm running windows XP, so that may be why.  Thanks for the help all! Smile
