I'll be ordering a pc with my tax return in about a month and a half. I already know I need to go with Windows Vista, but I don't know what version I need.
 
I've looked around alittle bit, and from what I can tell so far there are both 32bit, and 64bit versions for both Basic and Premium. Is this true or does Basic only come as a 32bit version?
 
If there are both 32 and 64bit versions of Vista Basic then if I ordered a pc with a 64bit PCU and Vista Basic would I get a 64bit version? Or would I get a 32bit version and lose out?
 
Obviosly I'm talking about ordering a pc from DigitalStormOnline.com Big%20smile

Vista basic is the slimmest(with the fewest features) version of the OS, most users go with premium.

You only need 64bit if you plan on having more than 2 gigs of ram.

Would 64bit be ideal for no more but no less then 2gigs? The pc will be used for nothing but gaming for the most part.

Just didn't want this Q to get forgotten about.
 
This is really driving me nuts. I'm assuming they would send the one best for the pc, but I'm trying to make sure.

I'm not sure what you mean by 64bit PCU, 64bit is just another form of Vista, it has nothing to do with what computer you purchase as it's the operating system that you choose to put on it.

And if you're mostly going to be gaming, and going to have only 2gigs of ram a 32bit OS is recommended as 64bit is for 4gigs.

Well I was reading up on what version of Vista I should use when I stumbled onto this on Windows website.

Damnit I forgot to add something, sorry not good on this forum stuff.
 
Anways that website said that 64bit processers would only work to there full abillity on a 64bit opertating systems. Processers such as a quad core. Thats what I was meaning by asking if I would get a 64bit version of Vista if I got a 64bit quad core processer.

Strictly from a gaming aspect, currently no, in the future yes. Most games now don't even use 2 gigs, and alot of games have more issues with 64bit than 32bit considering they're generally built for 32bit OS's. Also their are a few programs that still don't support 64bit, but most have begun to do both. Their are quite a few people who have 64bit who post on this forum, I'd wait to see their responses.

Now all I need is somebody who can fill me in on this 64bit stuff.
 
All I need to know is would it be better to try and get 4gigs to go 64bit? Or would it be better to stick with 2gigs of performance ram and stick with 32bit?

How far into the future will we get better performance with 64bit if at all?

4 gigs on 64 bit uses all 4 gigs

4 gigs on 32 bit only uses 2.5 gigs because there is a problem with the calculations.

2 gigs on 32 bit uses all 2 gigs.

if your looking for 4 gigs of memory u HAVE to go with 64 bit vista or it will not be recognized.

if u put 4 gigs with 32 bit vista 1.5 gigabytes will not get recognized

It depends on what games you play. Some games suck up a lot of ram while most others don't use a lot. But you will obviously see better performance with 4gb in a 64 bit system.

If you don't plan on upgrading in the future, 4GB of 800MHz ram would be a better choice than 2GB of 1066MHZ

That doesn't hold true. It depends on the amount of devices you have in your computer.

A computer with a single 8800GT 256mb would see ~3.8GB of system memory.

While a computer with tri-SLI 8800 Ultras would only see ~1.7GB of system memory.
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

Now the only thing I need to know is can somebody tell me if I got 4 gigs of ram would DigitalStormOnline for sure send me a 64 bit version of Vista? I would really hate to get 4 gigs of ram and then get a 32 bit operating system.

Bro, you tell DS what you want.  They don't pre-determine upon your specs what they think you should get and then build upon that assumption.  Tell them what you want and that is what you'll get.  Do not expect them to assume a build for you and ship you what you think they should build.

If this isn't clear, then you are headed for some awfully choppy waters.

Ya I see what your saying. The first time I looked threw it I didn't notice a couple of them said (64bit). Lol I'm a fool.

 
You know what you guys should do if you want. Post what you would order if you had 2k to spend. Keep in mind this is strickly a gaming pc.

Ah n/m I got an online buddy to help me out with it today. Thanx for all the help though. This has to be the friendliest forum I've ever seen.
 
I do have one last question though, I promise its the last one, lol. I've noticed the pro case has usb ports and headphone jacks on the front of the case. This would be bad ass sence I use TS alot, and I'm always having to unhook my headphones so nobody else uses them. Anyways though, could somebody tell me for sure if DS hooks these up? The only reason I ask is becuase the last time I bought I pc online ( from IBuyPower, I'll never go there again ) the case I chose had the same thing, but IBuyPower didn't hook them up. I tried, but I don't know that much about working on pcs so I was never able to figure it out.
 
Either way I will still be purchasing a pc in about month from DS, but this would really kick ass.

Damnit, I thought of another question, lol. The 500$ instant savings you get when you build the ultra costum option, and some others. Is that just temporally for the hollidays? Or do you guys always have some kick ass deals like that floating around? If it is only for the hollidays, could you guys let me know when it expires?

The front USB ports being active will depend on a couple of choices.
 
If you get the 680i A1 revision mobo it comes with two USB headers on the MOBO.  The front USB/Firewire ports require the two USB headers.  If you purchase a media card reader, this will use up one of the USB headers, but you get one USB port with the media reader and 2 of the 4 USB ports in the front bottom bay for a total of 3.
 
I have the 680i A1 and no media reader so all 4 of my USB ports on the front of the pro case work.
  
Also, they have had the instant savings for at least the last 4 months.
