Hi Folks,
I just upgraded my ISP cable modem. They recommended that I retire my old Linksys E4200 Wireless router and get something more 'modern' - lol. Does anyone have any recommendations. I definitely want something that's good for gaming and I'll also need it for work. I don't need a crap ton of features (though I know you end up paying for that for the better wi-fi modems). I'm currenlty looking at (in no particular order):

1). Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR500
2). Asus RT-AC86U
3). TP-Link Archer C5400 v2
4). TP-Link Archer C5400X

Anyone have any thoughts on these? Thanks!!

It all starts with that cable modem, and if you didn’t upgrade to the latest modem standard DOCSIS 3.1, you will be doing this again eventually.   Aaris, Netgear, and Motorola are the only makers right now.    It’s about max bandwidth into your home router with the fast growing list of web connected devices and streaming devices we are all collecting to use at home ...all at the same time.   I use the Aaris Surfboard SB8200.   The Netgear Nighthawk X4S C7800 is also a good modem.

As for WiFi routers, I can recommend the Linksys Velop Mesh WiFi system.   Very nice Linksys app controlls your home network.   Mesh systems can better distribute your WiFi signal around your home.    The powered router nodes connect wirelessly with each other and each also has 2 wired LAN ports on board for connecting wired devices.   You get however many router nodes you find that you need to get connectivity around your house.

Thanks HockeyBuck. The modem I was provided (which I have to use according to Charter) is DOCSIS 3.1 standard and seems to be pretty solid when I ran all the tests from this page:

I appreciate the recommendation. I've used Linksys for all my previous modems so I'll have to check this out. Thanks for the reply!!

I also use the Aris SB8200 and a very peculiar thing happened. Games would lag and "she who must be obeyed" could not upload her images - critical issue there by itself.  Every time we did a Speed Test, it would crash and reboot on upload. Both the electronics service (interior of house) and Comcast did a whole rewiring looking for the fault. I wish we had started with the router. Changed it to another SB8200 and all is fine. Just saying in case you get weird issues.

Thanks hoserator! Actually, I've had that happen before and it is pretty pesky figuring it out. Now, it's the second thing I check (next to the modem). At least now you have newer wiring!!

Good that the Charter modem is up to date...Comcast likes to claim latest greatest but don’t believe their branded modems are 3.1 yet.

Love the Linksys Velop Mesh system....currently I have 40 wired and WiFi devices being handled at the moment by 4 Velop nodes in a large 2 story house.   The nodes can also place 2 wired LAN ports where you may need them.    “She who cannot be incorrect” has our 2011 ODE plugged into one in an inconvenient office spot....problem solved...lol.

I was pretty surprised about the modem Charter provided. I suspect they sent me their best modem in error but hey, I'll take it. I actually ended up going for the overkill router since I just got my tax money - lol. I got the Asus GT-AC5300. Totally more than I need right now but hey, I buy a router once every 8 years or so - lol...

That they do. Well, at least my Asus routers have, can't say the same about the Netgear ones I used to use. Big%20Smile
