Hi,
I'm considering purchasing a PC with the following configuration: Specifications: Chassis: Cooler Master Cosmos S Edition Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) Motherboard: nVidia 790i Ultra Core 2 Quad (nForce 790i Ultra SLI) (DDR3 Only) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz OCZ Card Reader: Internal Digital Media Card Reader (Black) Hard Drive 1: 320GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Hard Drive 2: 320GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Raid Option: Setup hard drive 1 and hard drive 2 in a Raid 0 Stripe Configuration (Expert) Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Wireless Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1GB) (Includes PhysX Technology) TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Razer Barracuda AC-1 (Recommended) Extreme Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 3 WindTunnel (Copper Heatpipe Heatsink & Additional Case Fans) Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Red Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: - No Thanks Boost Processor: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my processor Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) I intend to use this PC for gaming (e.g., Crysis), and also for code development, image analysis, and mathematically intensive simulations. Have done a reasonable amount of research regarding the components, but would surely be grateful to hear what others have to say about it. I have a 27 inch monitor for use with this, with max resolution of 1920 X 1200. Budget is not a huge issue, but I'd like to keep the cost below $3500, if possible. Many thanks in advance! Principally because I'm not interested in pushing the performance to a point where it would possibly shorten the life of the components.
I'm just looking for some input regarding the configuration I've specified. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated. |

I only asked cause its a cheap way of getting a lot faster PC, the OCs here are moderate and parts are under warranty, so if anything were to happen you would be covered, and the moderate OC doesn't really shorten the life like that, you would probably buy another PC way before it would go out.
but its up to you, I'm just trying to make sure people are correctly informed before they make their decision ok on your own build, made you 2 versions: nvidia version: here you go Ticket# 196558 --- Price: $3101 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis: Cooler Master Cosmos S Edition Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) Motherboard: nVidia 790i Ultra Core 2 Quad (nForce 790i Ultra SLI) (DDR3 Only) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Corsair Card Reader: Internal Digital Media Card Reader (Black) Hard Drive 1: 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive 2: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Wireless Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896MB (Includes PhysX Technology) TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Razer Barracuda AC-1 (Recommended) Extreme Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 2 (Silent Artic Cooling Heat-sink Upgrade (Copper Heatpipes) Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Red Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: - No Thanks Boost Processor: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my processor Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty --------------------------------------------------------- ATI version: here you go Ticket# 196559 --- Price: $3064 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis: Cooler Master Cosmos S Edition Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) Motherboard: Asus P5E3 Premium WiFi-AP (Intel X48 Chipset) (Supports CrossFire) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Corsair Card Reader: Internal Digital Media Card Reader (Black) Hard Drive 1: 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive 2: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Wireless Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4870X2 2GB TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Razer Barracuda AC-1 (Recommended) Extreme Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 2 (Silent Artic Cooling Heat-sink Upgrade (Copper Heatpipes) Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Red Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: - No Thanks Boost Processor: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my processor Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty Edited by DST4ME - 18 Oct 2008 at 3:56pm |

Thank you for your suggestions. I appreciate the input immensely!
Any remarks regarding the choices you made? I noticed that you don't seem in favor of the RAID option. I used to work as a storage performance specialist at Sun Microsystems, and we did a lot of research that showed rather conclusively that RAID 0 can significantly improve performance for a variety of workloads.... Also, any remarks about 64-bit Vista, vs. 32-bit Vista, insofar as functionality and reliability are concerned? I know that a lot more folks are adopting the 64-bit version, but I've also heard that there are still driver issues.... Also, I take it that you think stage 2 cooling is sufficient for 2X SLI. I had worried a bit about this issue, for I don't want heat dissipation to be a problem given the SLI config. Any idea how noisy stage 2 is, as compared to stage 3? Finally, any remarks regarding the two configs? Did you suggest this simply because each offers a different video card option? In any case, thank you again for your time and your help, and if you have any further words of wisdom, regarding suggestions or things that you think would be nice to have in a config, please let me know! |

I removed raid and gave you a faster rpm drive, the veloci raptor is a 10,000 rpm drive and its plenty quick and unlike raid, if one of your HDD fails, you won't lose all your data on 2 drives.
32bit OS can only use total of 4GB of ram, 64bit can use up to 128, the premium version will see up to 16GB. with your system you got close to 2GB of ram in GPU alone, you are looking at 6GB of total ram, 32bit can only use 4GB total. vista 64bit is pretty good runs with a lot of stuff and what ever that can't run in 64bit can run in its 32bit environment. HAF is a great case, its got great airflow, lots of room and and stock, its pretty much in stage 3 the loudest thing in your PC is gonna be the fans from your card. now if you go stage 3 then the case fans will be changed and it will be louder. I suggested the 2 different builds, so you have choices. one has the 2GB ATI 4870x2, the other has 2 x 896MB 260 GTX, so the GPU is different and the mombos are different also. you are very welcome, its a pleasure to help. my only recommendations are for you to OC your PC and to get the 5 year warranty for a piece of mind. |
