His screw up was he was asking for donations, which in effect is asking to be paid for something that isnt yours in the first place. Plus as he said, he learned how to turn features on and off on creative cards and shared that info with others. Thats stealing.
Creative is at fault for providing crappy drivers, driving somebody to fix their crap for them, but what the guy did was illegal. Id be like somebody taking your work, then improving it slightly, then asking for money for it. Youd feel a little ripped off too.

Aye, the donation thing was wrong and he admits that.
But what Creative is doing is just messed up. Between them and Sony.
What the hell are these companies thinking?

This is not something out of the ordinary in the high end computer component industry. There are plenty of custom BIOS and drivers written every day for many of the items we find in a typical gaming system. Custom drivers for add-in cards are extremely common, and many companies actually encourage this practice as it is free value added for their customers. Asking for donations after the driver is written is actually pretty common as well, and I imagine this move by Creative Labs came as a bit of a shock to the author of those drivers.
It is however, Creative Lab's right to alienate themselves from what little customer base remains to them. For a company that had to remove themselves from the NASDAQ last year because their stock value was so far in the toilet, you would think they would be more interested in maintaining better customer relations, but they are indeed free to shoot themselves in the foot with a LAW (pun fully intended) if that is their desire. Personally, I think if a company acts in a way that is borderline fraudulent, it's up to the consumer to take to the frontlines in the defense of their rights. There are proper courses of action to follow, and agencies dedicated to protecting the consumer just waiting to help. In addition to boycott, the cosumer may avail themselves of the services of the BBB and their State's Attorney General. |

Its seems to me that all of these vendor's are putting out sub-par hardware and software! Just look at the posts on these boards from DSO staff about the batches of bad components they are recieving and how it delays some orders. And all over the net I read about all the faulty motherboards, video and sound cards and memory.... how many tons of bad sticks are being shipped? Add that to crappy drivers being delivered by EVERYONE to support their products.
When I first got into PC gaming about 9 years ago, I do not remember such junk being thrown out there in mass. Its like they are intentionally trying to kill the PC gaming format.
Maybe this is just a massive push to send it into the crapper so that stinking console games can become the only available format. Its sad as hell. Edited by Dog Lover - 02 Apr 2008 at 1:34pm |

Interesting but kinda sucks. I'ts always been tough for hardware manufactures to implement software, just not there thing. But comments that in effect say we can screw it up because it's ours so what, would be hard to believe if I didn't read it.
Whats interesting is in a lot of current threads about vista problems which appear to have nothing to do with sound. A lot of the solutions are to remove/upgrade/downgrad the Creative Drivers and even remove the card.
