Hi all,

I was wondering what is the difference between the 64 bit windows version and X86, and what does 86 stands for?
Also when I format my hard disk, I always have two program files folders. One is, program files, and the second one is program files (x86). Is that the same case for everyone or I am formating my hd wrng.

thnx

Looks like Sky has the answer!

Ok, 'slain this to me, why is 64 bit X64 and 32 bit X86?  Why not just be X32?

Working my way through college as a waiter "86" was a term we used when something was gone or bad.  Is Gates trying to tell us something about Vista? Wink

I think it's a holdover from 80386 processors when they went to a 32 bit system.

x86 is the isa of intel's 8086 processor.

32 bit is known as x86-32 but it's easier to say x86 or 32 bit. And 64 bit is known as x86-64 but it's easier to say x64.

I am installing a vista 64 bit, and I get x86, what does it mean? When I check the version of vista it says 64 bit. My question shouldn't i be 64 instead.

Also, please if someone can explain this to me why do I have 2 program file in c: ?
1-  program file
2- program file (x86)

Xrae,

Windows Vista x64 makes those two program file folders, its not related to your formatting. Since x64 is backwards compatible with 32bit software, every 32bit software/app you install goes into Program Files (X86) and native 64bit software goes into the regular Program Files folder.
