Hello-I'm having my system upgraded with a Nvidia 750i board and a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) processor among other things.  I work for a college and get software pretty cheap but we don't have the Vista 64 bit OS. We do have the XP 64 bit OS though.  What would be better to put on my system, the Vista 32 bit or XP 64 bit?  I also got 4GB DDR2 OCZ at 1066MHz (SLI-Ready Edition).  I don't even know if the XP64 will use all the memory.

Or should I call DS as my computer is only in stage 2 and buy the Vista premium 64 bit?

If your video card memory is more than 1GB, you'd probably want 64 bit.

vista 64 is great, but can be a pain in a the ass at times.  I recently reinstalled vista 64 and the computer is now stuck in a boot loop after trying to load SP1 (this has happened twice before when installing SP1)... Little things like this seem to bog down the OS, however, overall, I would still say its worth it, especially if you can pair with XP for a dual boot system.

I came to this thread with a similar question.  I'm looking at a system with 4 GB RAM, QX9650, GTX 280 x2.  Trying to decide on Vista 32 vs 64.  I've heard of Vista 64 having problems with certain applications.  Harley, what did you mean by "all the way thru SP 1  with only 2 gigs of ram"?

Also, Home Premium vs. Ultimate?

Thanks.

twin GTX-280, you will likely need x64 to have any memory at all...  I mean you are looking at losing 2 Gigabytes of addressable space just between the GTX-280s alone, then you have overhead for windows, sound card (built in or not, network ports/cards, etc...)

You will not even see 2 Gigabytes of available memory no matter how many sticks of ram you install with x32 windows.

Remember that in vista sp1 your system tell you how much ram you have but don't' confuse that with how much ram vista is using, cause its still using 3.5GB

the above is only for the 32bit vista.

I perfer Vista Ultimate,as you can make your own Image back-ups from that ..The others only let you back up to a HDD

I set up my OS and desktop, all my services, then before games and large installs make my own back up to disk that in a OS failure you just run the isk and boom...You are all set up like new again..All your favorites, virus, spy,,crap cleaner, everything is placed back into operation..Simple,easy........No more setting up then..... That will typically just take (1) double DVD........as it makes an image of everything...

OK, I think I'll go with Vista Ultimate 64.  I'd like to try imaging, and I understand it also comes with Remote Desktop connection.

But if I order from DS, I would expect it come with SP1 already installed?

RDP or Terminal Services as us geeks used to win 2k  and winnt moniker it is a utility that lets you remotely control another PC from your workstation

Vista Ultimate and business come with full licenses to it, IE you can use RDP for both connecting to and accepting connections from remote computers.

Vista Home levels just have remote assistance which is a crippled version that allows someone with full RDP to connect to your PC (If you turn it on) to help you with an issue.

Must have been well hidden... behind the leaves of that potted fern in the corner!

No one pays attention to a fern... hell you probably never even noticed it yourself.
