I am very reluctant to go with Vista for my next rig because of all the negative things I have heard. I realize XP is old but it is rock solid on my currrent system. But I have XP 64, which is not compatible with some programs. Would Vista 64 create such issues as well?

what programs?

16-bit and 8-bit programs will not run in a 64-bit operating system. Doesn't matter if it's Vista or XP.

Cannot load Canon software for my DSLR that allows direct download from camera to PC, is my biggest concern. Netflix online movies will not run on a 64 bit OS. These really are not deal breakers, but things that annoy me somewhat.

For netflix, you can use the 32-bit browser.

Unfortunately if there aren't any 64-bit drivers for your camera, you are sort of out of luck.

Yeah out of luck with the Canon, but as far XP or Vista goes.....am I going to just have to embrace Vista and bid a fond farewelll to XP, or is XP still a viable option for another year or 2?

Well any operating system is viable, it just comes down to what you need. Vista or XP, just a matter of preference. Go to a store and test out Vista yourself and see if you like it.

TBone,   its really a preference call on the OS you want,,, I personally use XP,  I do alot of Video and picture renders plus alot of graphic manipulations.   I just have been use to getting around XP quite well and not to say Vista is bad, I just have not found a real good reason to switch when XP does everything I throw at it...like one of the above posters said, go to best buy or someplace and try out Vista,  ya never know you may like it,, or as another said,,, VMware and load up XP or Vista on that and try it out at home in your own time..

Google= VMware,,,  its software that will alllow you to run multiple OS on one system,, its very safe and easy to install and use..

TB, its much simpler then it sounds, vmware is a freeware app that you can install on your OS, wmware allows you to install different operating systems in it and run them from your desktop, so for example on your vista 64bit, you would install vmware, then run vmware, and then install xp in vmware.

Here is somebody that had xp but wanted to run NT on also, so they installed vmware on their xp and installed NT in vmware so now you see windows xp desktop and on it you will see vmware running windows NT, now this person can install apps in that NT and test them.

you want to do the same except you will have vista 64 and will be installing 32bit os in wmware.
