Since Microsoft announced that they'll be offering XP until 2009 and supporting it until 2014 is it worth updating to Vista? Are their any real important innovations that are worth the extra trouble and apparent issues?
Windows 7 is expected to be released in 2009-2010 so there doesn't seem a real point to upgrade right now since XP is far more stable than Vista from a gaming aspect. Is DX10 truly worth it? Nearly all games will be playable on XP until MS stops selling Vista correct?
From my personal account Vista didn't really seem that different than XP, some of the looks were different and it had a few gadgets to try and make the PC look like a Mac. It wasn't spectacular enough to take risks and have continual support issues where if I stuck with XP things would probably be better off. And after all the DX9-DX10 comparisons, they're not that different if you have DX9 settings high and DX10 in medium.

Wasn't this addressed in a thread already in a galaxy far, far away?

I went with Vista just because I feel it is time to upgrade. I hope I made the right choice. I have BioShock and Crysis and they are "made for vista" so I am hoping when my new system gets here... with vista ultimate... I am going to be in heaven!

This is a polarizing topic. Some people feel like you MUST upgrade to Vista because it is newer, others (such as myself) have the notion that since it isn't necessary, why pay the extra money for it an OS that will use much more of your system resources.
There would need to be a vista-only product or feature that was jaw dropping for me to put up with installing it on my main rig. My DSO system has XP Home, my wife (a developer) uses XP Pro, and we have Vista Home Premium on our laptop (which is just a few vista-related irritations away from being wiped and reinstalled with XP).

It was but now that Windows 7 has been announced for 2009-10 it seems that Vista is truly futile unless video games in the next 2-3 years will be Vista/DX10 only.
Also that's why I was asking questions that no one else has, or as far as I could tell they haven't.

If a game is DX10 based, but you have XP, is it still playable?

It's an elective IMO. Vista is more like a pitstop between XP and Windows 7 than it is "the future". If I had to pick one, and only one OS, it would be XP, not Vista. Fortunately, you don't have to pick one, you can install both .

XP Pro or Vista???? lol! XP Pro sp2 until Vista is as reliable, stable, and compatible. The performance differences with Crysis etc, are not enough to justify spending $$$ on a OS w/ more problems than a calculus book. I expect DX10 to become available to XP sooner than later, and there is already talk of a new Microsoft OS releasing in 2010. Playing Crysis now on highest settings and so beautiful now....can't believe that Vista would make that much of a difference. & Tyler is right. Dual boot. I was thinking about this, just to c 4 myself.

I might be in the minority here but I got Vista 64 on my system and would absolutely not choose XP over Vista. The look and feel of the operating system is so much sleeker, aero is awesome, I have had nearly no "Vista-related irritations," and on a system with enough horsepower, the 64-bit OS is really fast and responsive.
