Well, first off, why AMD? Intel is much more powerful at this point in time. Specifically when it comes to multi-core processors. The sound card is also kind of a waste. Any motherboard you get from us will have the same quality of onboard sound. The only real advantage to getting a sound card these days (at least from us) is getting a powerful APU (audio processor). Which will take all the stress of high quality audio off of the CPU. The Audigy does not feature an APU, so there's no advantage. I would also recommend a more powerful video card, though I can't say what specifically. Let me know what you're designing this for, and I can recommend something. As for the wireless card and an ethernet connection. Yes, they both work together. I hear from Kelly that it's actually called shotgunning. There are no advantage outside of being able to connect from various methods though. Only other problem I can see with this setup is the RAID. You only have the one hard drive, so you can't RAID. I wouldn't exactly recommend it anyway. RAID is really more for enthusiasts, as it just gives you one more thing to troubleshoot. There are some performance advantages, but they aren't easy to notice.

Alrite, thanks for the audio tip =)
mostly for right now im gonna be using this for CS:S, BF2, BF2142, and COD4 once I get this. Right now im customizing an intel version of this and I it is looking a little better ... little more expensive but im liking the Quad proc lol. As for the connection methods ... i meant if i get the wireless one does the computer come with an ethernet port also? once i get done customizing it ill post it. |

Amen to that brother Dashuu. If there's one thing I'd change about my system it would be to buy larger independent drives. RAID seems to account for 80% of my "driver challenges," and I also don't notice a huge bonus to having the 10k rpm Raptors. YMMV. Bf2m |

personally, i dont understand having the muy nice keyboard and mouse when youre on a budget. it seems silly, imho. thats over a hundred bucks alone you can drop on a better mobo. i know looks are great and all, but on a budget you kinda want the best computer components and can worry about uber awesome peripherals later, right?

Also keep in mind the Lycosa is a FLAT keyboard. Think like laptop, where each key is the same level as the row below it. Takes some time getting used to if youre used to regular desktop keyboards.
Also the rubber coated keys on mine are starting to spot up..apparently i got oily fingers.
And lastly the Lycosa has no clear markings on the keys. So you have to be pretty adept at typing. Yes they are lighted keys, but should that light ever go out, you wont be able to see the keys all that well. Think of it as like a keyboard whos keys have been pressed a billion and half times and the white letter paint is faded to the point its almost invisible. Thats what its like. (obviously its just a hole in the shape of the letter to let the light pass though the key, but im trying to get an idea across on what it will look like)
It also uses up 2 USB ports. But evens that out by having one on the keyboard itself for your mouse, so its a even split there.
Still after a while to getting used to it, i really love that keyboard. Its very nice. But as the person above me said, its of no real use for a budget system. A microsoft keyboard and mouse is plenty. Use the saved money from that to put either into the computer hardware more or just put it in your pocket.
That 100 bucks you saved could be better put getting the Q6600 overclocked and a stage 2 air cooling. Edited by SunfighterLC - 25 Mar 2008 at 10:47pm |

Let me ask this:
Is there any way you can recycle a monitor from a current system rather than trying to squeeze that into the budget for this build? You can do some very nice things with $1500 if you don't have a monitor hogging up $200 of that budget. I'm going to add my voice to the others when it comes to that keyboard selection. Gaming keyboards provide zero performance advantage aside from (potentially) macro features and should be purchased, IMHO, when there is absolutely nothing left to upgrade except the keyboard, and you have $100+ burning a hole in your pocket. $1503 If you do have a way to reuse a monitor, or pick one up cheaper locally, another $200 would allow for a nice upgrade to the motherboard or a faster graphics card. |

Right now im gaming on a 7year old dell (dell dimension 2400) with a 6year old video card (ATI Radeon 9250 PCI 128MB)... lol
the mouse and keyboard im using is a microsoft wireless which is about 3-4 years old. (and sucks really bad) ANYTHING is better than what I have ... i REALLY need a new monitor (using the monitor that came with my computer) and theres nothing hear locally thats cheap lol (only like walmart or bestbuy which arnt that cheap haha) Id rather buy the mouse and keyboard with the computer than separately .. idk just a personal preferance ... i want everything new haha. i can raise my budget just have to wait about another month , i wanted to buy the computer when i got my next paycheck cause my mom wants all the money in her hands when i use her credit card ... unless i can convince her to have like half of it and pay her the rest later. my gaming clan are all telling me to build my computer myself but i like the 3yr warranty and lifetime tech support. but ill think about that ... idk (ill check into all the prices of each part and see how much i can save) |

I'm still using the Compaq 7550 17" CRT that came with my Presario 8 years ago. That extra couple hundred dollars made a huge difference in the parts I was able to select in the rest of my build which had to come in at under $1600. I wondered the same thing about building my own... I had a similar situation, with gaming org members telling me to just build. I took careful note of the number of times the same people complained about BSOD's and random CTDT's and decided to have someone that knew more than me do the building.
If you are dead set on the monitor, I would wait until you can put another $170 in your mom's hands for a better motherboard. Drop in a 680i so your overclock will be better and you can SLI a second 9600GT down the road if games start taking more widespread advantage of multi GPU setups. A 550W PSU is definitely capable of SLI with that card. |
