Finally so frustrated with old Velocity Micro system that it's time to just buy (8800GT SLI, Intel 6700 duo). Have been following the forum for about 3 months in anticipation of buying a new system. Looking in the 2000-2400 range and primarily for gaming and some regular use too. Play mostly FPS and strategy (Stalker, Metro, COD's, Fallout, Sins of Solar Empire, Battlefield whatever, Homefront, Crysis 2) Currently playing on 1600x1000 resolution but planning to buy new monitor within the next year or so, partially depending on what happens with 3D. If 3D goes big and widespread then I'll buy but if not I don't want to waste all that money (like the PhysX card I had years ago) and I'll just get Dell ultrasharp 24 and play at 1920x1200. Have two configs that I'm considering. Now before you all lambast the case selection, it fits in a very expensive built-in desk. I made sure it's open in front, back open and top with vent cutout on L side. Besides, I have two very small children and a very busy practice so I get 1-2 hours max to play in the evening. There will be no marathon sessions that I would have to worry about, It won't even get turned on til evening anyway. I would consider adding SSD later when they improve and don't really have time or experience to tinker around inside much. If I go with the single card I plan on updating with the 780GTX,880GTX, or whatever is the beast card when DX12 comes in few years. I know the airflow won't be as good but for very limited use I would be OK.
Here are two and let me know what you think

Are you absolutely sure the Elite 430 is the only one that'll fit? What are your desk dimensions?
Build 1 looks good for a 3D ready system in the future. Edited by ablahblah - 02 Apr 2011 at 5:35pm |

build one is the one you want, build 2 can't expand gpu-wise.
change mobo to deluxe, if haf 922 fits go with that. |

Desk space is 11 inches wide 22 in tall and 23 inches deep. Like I said back is open and front with no doors or anything. Had side window cut in left side for side vent fans. I know it really sucks that the most limiting factor is furniture but we weren't planning to stay in house until market crashed. Now I'm stuck with it. I know airflow is better in HAF cases but is it really that big a difference for as little as it gets used. Just afraid with all extra outside plastic on HAF would have to wedge it in there and negate airflow.
Any thoughts on 3D? I know it's not that big a deal now but if it really takes hold I don't want to have to start over from scratch. At the same time don't want to overkill gpu and never use it. Is sabertooth not sli or very good mobo? Any other suggestions? |

Also on phone rep said could easily put intake fan on left side and exhaust on top if needed.

Looks like HAF 912 would fit but 922 would be pretty tight with all that decorative platic around it. Would HAF 912 be that much better than elite 430?

HAF 922
- 22 inches deep (pull it out of the desk a bit?) - 19.7 inches tall (2~3 inches of leeway) - 10 inches wide (you have a window cutout anyways, right? doesnt matter correct?) If you still want to go with the Elite 430, Silverstone may be releasing drive bay fan brackets that are coming along with their Raven 3 model, or you can probably just inquire to pick up some directly when it releases. They mount 120mm fans in the front bays, so that may help with your airflow a bit. Edited by ablahblah - 02 Apr 2011 at 10:12pm |

Doc, ablahblah's recommendation for the 922 is a good one. I've got the 922. It comes with 3 fans but has holes for 5. I had DS add two more for me. One on the left side and one on the bottom. The measurements for my space is 11" wide x 22.5 high x 20 deep. My fans are also a brilliant shade of red. Don't yell at me DST, sometimes a man has to have bling over performance. LOL!!

LOL read my post again I also told him to get 922.
@GasDocAZ, with deluxe and sli, you have pci lanes left open for other cards and also you get some extras for $16 price difference. |

Actually i remeasured and the space is exacly 10 inches wide so the 922 is out for sure but the 912 would fit. I read the specs on coolermaster.com and it looks like it could support two 200 mm fans, one in the front and one in the top, in addition to the other two 120 mm fans. Would that be enough airflow.

Now that the case is settled (haf912 with 2 200 mm fans). Now I want to know impressions of cards for graphics intensive games. Starting at 1600x1000 and hopefully going to 1900x1200 soon, how much difference will I really see with a 580 vs 2 570sli?
1. Anybody think 3d will take off or is it gonna go way of Betamax? 2. With all the frame rates on the charts, is that even noticeably better visuals than one step back? 3. Is 570 sli any more future proof than a single 580? Or would it be easier and more cost effective to just get next flagship card in 2 years? And running single card how much power supply do I need? Could it be assumed that power usage has peaked and that future flagship cards will use roughly same power draw. (sorry for all the crystal ball questions) 4. If I decide to go one card which mobo do I need? Getting close to ordering, just waiting a bit to see if anything new comes along. I know no matter how long you wait, something will always come right after you buy. Thanks to all of you for your assistance and patience |

for being at 1600 x 1200 and then going to 1900 x 1200 res, I would go with a system that has one 570, but can go sli, so that when I'm at 1900 x 1200, if I see I need more power, I can drop a second 570 in myself real quick.
1. I think if it does not take off, it will have its own market, I'm already seeing 3D TVs and more and more 3D programing, that normally means that there is more coming down the road. 2. Personally I have not had too much experience with monitors/tvs with faster than 60hz refresh, so I can't really say. 3. there is no such thing as future proof, look at sli 275 from 2 years ago and see how future proof they are, they can't even run some new games at 1900 x 1200, you can be 2 year proof IMO, but to be truly future proof, you need to upgrade to future gpus. at 1600 x 1200 both 580 and sli 570 is a waste of money IMO, on a 60Hz monitor. at 1900 x 1200, I would go with a system that has one 570, but can support 2, that way if I need more gpu power, I can drop in a second for sli, otherwise I get to save my money, instead of throwing at something I may not see any benefit from. 4. the p8p67 is a good board but no sli on it. |
