I'm so very close to pulling the trigger on a DS build...unfortunately, my habit of being nit-picky is going to cause me to miss out on the Memorail Day warranty upgrade. Such is life.
Anyway, I'm interested in overclocking my CPU (may have DS do it, it's free anyway), and I'll overclock my GPU myself. The CPU cooler I'm getting will work fine, but I'm curious if the Zalman fans are worth the upgrade? The case I get will likely be a HAF 922 which is known to have good cooling (so tempted to spend the extra $150 on the Fortress 2, that case looks so sweet!). Are the Zalman fans worth the $60? My initial thought is that the stock fans in the HAF 922 should be just fine, but....I wanted to get some opinions first.
This is the build I'm looking at 410668
The only change in the build is upgrading to a Corsair 750w, sapphire 5870, and the Seagate 1.5TB.

The Zalman fans are loud according to people on the forums. The stock fans should be enough

a little looking around didnt get me anywhere on finding the specs for the haf case fans. while im sure they are not bad, thats a risk youll take if you buy them without comparing stats. I dont know what started the stigma on these forums about extra case cooling not being good, i think that is completely rediculous.
even if the stock cooling on a haf 922 is "pretty good" you can either 1 request specific fans from DSO or you can buy and install them yourself when you get the rig, my case is only air cooled and i had wonderful results with the case cooling mods i did myself, do not overlook this, and dont listen to ANYTHING anyone tells you if they dont have the data to back it up.
*edit* so i found some info on the fans,
Cooling System:
Front: 200 mm fan x 1 Red LED on / off fan x 1 / 700 RPM / 19 dBA Top: 200 mm fan x 1 / 700 RPM / 19 dBA (can be swap to 120 mm fan x 2 ) Rear: 120 mm fan x 1 / 1200 RPM / 17 dBA Bottom: 120 / 140 mm fan x 1 (optional) Side: 200 mm fan x 1 (optional) this lists dBA but not CFM
which means to me that either someone is lazy, or the specs arent that attractive.

zalmans are ridiculously loud, as I've personally experienced. go research some good fans and tell DS to use those instead.

I have Zalman Fans in my case. They are a little loud. I wouldn't go as far to say they are ridiculously loud. It's kind of like buying a motorcycle. You can have the quiter uncool Honda or the louder cooler Harley. lol

This is why I would hate to be Digital Storm.. lol
One of their Techs could create a wonderful PC and they could honestly say the PC is quiet, then the customer receives it and says it is just stupid loud, the next customer says it is quiet, then the next says it is a little loud, and everyone is correct....
Noise levels are subjective, so there really is no right or wrong answer. It is based on your interpretation of what quiet or loud is to you..
I like to tell people they are loud as hell, so that when they get it they usually either say, yes they are loud as hell, or, they are loud, but not as loud as I expected.. lol Edited by justin.kerr - 07 Jul 2010 at 11:55am |

I actually recommend getting the high-RPM Zalman fans with a fan controller so you can adjust the settings to your liking.

blagh, you know what, looking back at the Zalman's I had before, I think i was exaggerating though. They're loud, not THAT loud though. R4-L2R fans from CoolerMaster are actually a lot louder at stock speeds. Fan noise really just depends on where the fans are located though. If the case is oriented so the fan is somewhat pointing toward you, yep, you'll hear them. If it isn't, then it'll be quieter. Like justin said, it's really just a relative thing, |
