Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone had any input in reference to performance: laptop vs tower. Ideally, I'd purchase a desktop, but it's not possible at the house right now so I've been looking into getting a laptop. Any info/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Laptops typically are more expensive for the same performance as a desktop, the buyer paying for the portability.   Mobile video cards are weaker in gaming than its desktop number match, the 980m not the performance of a gtx 980 but maybe a gtx 970 for example.    Recent laptops do however allow a desktop gtx 980 to be used, the DS Banshee, Sager 9870, an example.

Desktops are also much easier and less expensive to upgrade.

A gaming rig, imho, is a desktop if possible, a laptop if portability is needed.

Tower, reasons pretty much stated above. Laptops die much faster under stress than desktops, and when things do go bad as they do, its much easier to fix/upgrade the desktop.

Thanks for the response guys. I'd much rather have a desktop, but I've no where to put it for probably quite a while. Considering my last computer was made in 2008 and pushing a Nvidia 560, ANYTHING will be an improvement!

Take a look at the Bolt, which is somewhat small form factor, and the Aura, which has the entire computer built into the back of the screen.

Edit: Someone had mentioned you can call in and order an Eclipse, which is smaller than the Bolt, as well. They just don't have an online configurator for it anymore.

if you don't have room for a monitor and keyboard than the point is moot.  if you do, then you can probably accommodate a small form factor pc as well.

Thanks again. I saw the Aura, and it looks pretty good and I think I could get away with setting it up somewhere. We've only got one room for a TV/monitor, and it's dedicated already. The aura might be an excellent compromise. I'm taking away that a laptop should pretty much be avoided if at all possible :)

If you don't need to the mobility of a laptop, then the performance compromise is very large.

None of my business but a monitor can be mounted on the wall if needed so that it takes no room on the desk or etc.

i'm sure Roykirk will will be around sometime to offer an alternative viewpointBig%20Smile

personally, i went thru a buying series of so called "desktop replacement" laptops with gaming in mind and they all left me feeling like i spent to much for too little that didn't last nearly as long as the desktop.

Yea I feel like for the amount of money I'd spend on the laptop, I'd get much more of a PC. Thanks for the input.

Hahaha

Seems I've acquired something of a reputation here?  Hrm...

Not necessarily an alternative viewpoint, but rather my own experiences in getting desktop replacement/gaming laptops over the last decade and a half.  For me, it's worth the extra cost because I get to take the center of my universe with me everywhere I want.  Fire or other disaster hits my house, and it's the only material possession I couldn't bear to lose.  But that's me.  I require that portability. Most others do not.  But if you do, then it's worth it, especially now that desktop-class GPUs can be put in them.

YMMV

Just to add a bit to the discussion. For Laptops I always recommend our premium thermal compound and our cooling pad.
All evil comes from within,
Not from Without,
Therefore, the 1st step on the Holy Warrior path,
Is to recognize thyself as thy 1st enemy.
