So it looks like ASUS' new power circuitry for their Z390 boards (other than the Maximus XI Gene, Extreme, and Apex) are not that good. This includes the Maximus XI Hero, Formula, and Code, as well as all of the lower tier Strix, Prime, and Tuf boards. It is not recommended for the i9-9900K processors with their high power requirements.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLO-vYjJN-I The Gene, Extreme, and Apex should still be good, but for lower cost boards, Gigabyte and ASRock should probably be considered. |

I seen that earlier today and I'm pretty disappointed in ASUS for cutting corners on what they claim is one of their "flagship" ROG boards...namely the XI Hero. I have a system in stage 6 right now with that same board paired with a 9900k. But my question is...as a normal everyday user who isn't going to try to push their CPU to its virtual limits...would I be hindered by not having a "true" 8 phase VRM? I mean I can see where ASUS is trying to change things up a bit but is it at the cost of performance to the consumer? The only thing I can really see as being the negative to what they have done is the VRM running at higher temps...then again I'm no Guru when it comes to something that technical with a PC. I'm going to try to not let something like this revelation get between me and my enjoyment of the PC that'll be shipping in a few days. Wish me luck

If you're keeping it at stock speeds, it'll probably be okay.
Here's another video comparing boards, including the Hero, all around a similar price point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lAE3PgWoRc He mentions the Hero want to run in a 95W limited configuration and the uncore multiplier will default to x43 rather than the x47 on other boards. In his testing, temps of the VRMs are markedly higher on the Hero, but still not close to the junction temperature limit (Tj). Edited by - 04 Nov 2018 at 8:12pm |
