    Posted: 27 Jun 2016 at 12:48pm
Hello Folks!

I am upgrading from 8GB to 16GB RAM on my Bolt 3. How does one remove the heat sink in the center of the MB so there is room to remove/replace the 4 GB sticks? I don't want to accidentally destroy something just to add 8 GB of RAM lol! Your help would be greatly appreciated!

What kind of heatsink is it? I take it that it is not a water cooler.

There are four screws on that go through the motherboard that retain the heatsink. They are at the corners of the processor. You may need to (probably want to regardless) remove the fan, which is probably held onto by a couple metal clips. These clips maybe tensioned pieces of wire that go into the holes at the corner of the fan.

The other possibility is that it is screwed in from the backplate, but I'm not sure how many recent coolers do it this way.

One thing to make sure is that you have thermal interface material (TIM) to replace the stuff you have on your processor. You'll need to clean off the stuff you currently have on it and reapply the new stuff. You can't reused TIM because you'll create air bubbles that insulate against heat transfer, exactly opposite of what you're trying to accomplish. Look up youtube videos of the application of TIM.

If your heat sink is noctua you maybe able to get away with just removing a fan from the heat sink and not the whole thing.

can you give us more info and/or a pic of the cooler/ram

With the Bolt 3 it will be a top-down low-profile cooler.

Is the TIM material a putty, tape, or like an insulated sheet?

Its a paste like stuff most times: have a look here and here

Learn what to do and what not to do from those videos they are just there for a basic idea and not the exact correct way.

If there is a water cooler, it shouldn't require removal of the cooler to get access to the RAM. At that point, all you would need to do is press on the tabs on the side of the memory to pop out the module.

The OP probably means the Zalman air cooler. That would overhang the ram. Not sure the model they're now using, but most unloosen with a couple of screws.

Looks like the Scythe Big Shuriken 2. So yes, you will need to undo the screws from the back of the motherboard for this. Just reverse the steps for installation.
