Hey guys! Gunlord here, thinking about getting my third machine from Digital Storm :D
The first one I bought, a Bolt I, came to me about 2 years ago and served me well enough. However, it's recently been moved downstairs (along with my old laser printer) for my parents to use whenever they need to print things. In the meantime, I more recently bought a solid state HD-equipped laptop from DS (a Lance) a year ago and have found myself very pleased indeed with it. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to get my desktop with a solid state drive, but ah well. Now, I'm looking to purchase another desktop, this time with a SSD. Here's what I'm looking at: https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1340624 Chassis Chassis Model: Pre-built Digital Storm Bolt 3 Exterior Finish: Black Brushed Aluminum Hairline Finish Trim Accents: Edge to Edge Premium Acrylic Core Components Processor: BACKORDERED ETA Early January: Intel Core i7 6700 3.4GHz (Quad Core) (Not Overclockable) Motherboard: ASUS Z170I PRO GAMING (Intel Z170 Chipset) (Mini-ITX) (Up to 1x PCI-E Device) System Memory: 32GB DDR4 2666MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX (High-Performance) Power Supply: 600W SilverStone SX600-G (Gold Plus Rated) (Supports up to GTX TITAN X) Storage / Connectivity Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 8x / CD-Writer 8x) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (250GB Samsung 850 EVO) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (6TB Seagate) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics / Multimedia Graphics Card(s): 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB (Includes PhysX) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Digital Storm Engineering Extreme Cooling: High Performance Cooler with Five Heatpipes H20 Tube Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Chassis Fans: Standard Black 120mm Fans Digital Storm TwisterBoost Technology Boost Processor: Standard Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Automatic Overclocking Software Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Accessories / Goodies: None Customer Care Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) I also have a couple of general questions: 1: How long is the 200 bucks off and free shipping deal going to last? I think I can get a hundred dollars off this machine along with free shipping, which is a little more than pennies, I say. It says that the processor I want is out of stock until January, if I order now can I still get the free shipping and discount? 2: How stable are SSDs? One reason I went for an SSD for my laptop is that I was told that SSDs are extremely vulnerable to power failures, which can be mitigated somewhat by a laptop's internal batteries. While the power doesn't go out very often where I live, it does happen occasionally when we have heavy rain, so I was wondering how big of a concern this should be for me if I'm buying an SSD-equipped desktop? 3: Is there any way I can hook this machine up to a VGA display? My old Bolt I was hooked up to my TV via a VGA connection, which required a VGA adaptor Digital Storm was actually kind enough to provide. Are there any adaptors which could connect this 980 video card to my VGA tv set? 4: Finally, are there any color options, or is black the only one? D: Thanks for your time, everyone :D Edited by Gunlord - 19 Dec 2015 at 5:21pm |

Hi Gunlord... Your Bolt build looks good to me. I would recommend Western Digital over Seagate HDD. Seagate reliability tests lower plus the WD has more than double the warranty.
1. DS never says when a promo will start or end. I would think it will carry through until back orders arrive, the promo good the day of the order and not when it's built. 2. Results I have read do say the the solid state drives are a bit more susceptible to data loss and corruption in power failures than the mechanical drives. Their caps discharge and drop the data is one scenario. Both types of drives can be effected by sudden loss, depending on timing. 3. VGA adaptors will work. 4. Black case is all I've seen. Good luck. |

Thanks very much, bprat :D Couple more questions:
Are there any 6 TB Western Digital drives available, though? The nice 6 TB was why I was looking at Seagate Aside from that, what kind of VGA adaptor will I need for the nvidia 980? HDMI to VGA? Finally, re: solid state drives, are there any types that are perhaps less susceptible to power loss, or are there any computers with small batteries that would provide enough power to quickly turn off the machine normally in case of a power outage? I looked it up online and found a device called a "UPS"--"Uninterruptible Power Supply." Do any such devices exist for desktops? Thanks again! Edited by Gunlord - 20 Dec 2015 at 7:46am |

My pleasure.
I don't see a 6Tb WD drive. DS has a 4TB WD. The Seagate will certainly work and you might never know the difference, just that WD does test more reliable and the warranty is 5 years WD vs 2 years for most Seagates. A DVI-I dual link male to VGA female should do it. DVI-I allows both analog and digital signals. VGA is analog. That would plug into your 980. Depending on the 980 installed, a VGA adapter might be included. A lot of manufacturers include them. Edited by bprat22 - 20 Dec 2015 at 7:52am |

Yeah, these are pics of the adaptors I use:
This is connected to my TV and used to be connected to my deskie before I moved it downstairs. Another look at it. This is how my desktop is currently connected to the VGA line to my downstairs monitor. So yeah, I have a lot of VGA in my house. Will the DVI-I dual link male to VGA female work with a plug like the one in the first two pics? :o Also, quick question: Windows 7 professional should be able to make full use of a 32GB ram, right? :D |

Windows 7 Pro can use up to 192GB with x64. So, yep.
The adapter you're using now should work. Tough to say with the pics, because there are so many. Some are a single plastic unit with connectors on both ends, like your bottom pic and some have the cables and or boxes as part of the unit. |

Alright, thanks. And related to what you said about SSDs and power failures, are there any mini-batteries for PCs or "Uninterruptible Power Supplies," even if they last for only a few minutes, that could give me some insurance when it comes to an SSD?

There's a ton of different UPS devices you could use. I don't have one, so a newbie on that.
Here's one mentioned elsewhere on the forums as very good. APC XS 1500 Also..... APC BX1500G 1500 VA 865 Watts 10 Outlets Power-saving Back-UPS XSI pasted from another thread.....http://www.digitalstorm.com/forums/surge-protector-tidf26965-pidf285230-kwfups/ Hope that helps. |

Oh, so those Uninterruptible Power Supply things are variants of the "surge protectors" that turn one outlet into several? I wonder if I have a few, but if not I can see about getting one. Thanks :D
If not, though, I'm wondering, are there any differences in speed between the normal hard drives? Rather than a SSD as my boot-up drive I was thinking of getting the 2TB Western Digital Enterprise one. Is that one faster than a regular hard drive but still relatively resistant to power outages? |

I believe the Enterprise drives are server grade, meant for 24/7 use and built a little more rugged to accommodate it. Plus the error checking is faster, decision making much quicker whether to fix or just mark bad sectors, etc.
Not sure how beneficial it would be over consumer grade for most. |

Hm, okay, thank you. Do you know of any cheaper UPS things, preferably under 100 dollars? The one available from Digital Storm's surge protector selections is a little expensive...

If I was in the market for a UPS, I'd go to Amazon or Newegg and check ratings, etc and get one based on your system load. The rig you listed has a 600watt psu so a 600 psu UPS would be needed. You can get them cheaper there.
Not sure what else goes into the decision, never looked into it. I wouldn't go too cheap. You want a unit that will give you several minutes to finish any writes, saves, etc. Others here have bought them and maybe one will ring in. |

Amazon has a ton of UPS items of all sizes. I only have experience with the APC brand (we have a lot of short power interruptions whenever it rains so have every electronic system in the house connected to one to avoid the surges) Every so often you have to change the batteries (some last quite a number of years). If you don't suffer from power interruptions, there is no need. Be aware that the model number is not the actual wattage rating, that is less. You have to check the model's particular ratings. You can get some for close to 100USD that might fit your needs depending on your power supply.

One more question, is there a difference between the Corsair fans, which are an extra 29 dollars, and the default ones? Also, this setup has just normal cooling without liquid stuff, right? :)

Yep, your build is all air cooled, no liquid cooling for cpu or gpu.
I never knew what the stock fans were, so not sure. The optional fans are the SP fans, meaning static pressure, for pushing air through radiators, etc so I believe they are more useful if you had the 240mm rad liquid cooling that mounts under the top. For your setup, just basic case cooling, I don't see the need. By the way, that was 2 questions. Just messing with you. Edited by bprat22 - 21 Dec 2015 at 9:23am |

Hehe, thanks :D I think I should be almost ready to buy it. Just wondering about the price--so I think I'll go with this:
https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1341515 it has a 500 GB solid state drive and the 4 TB Western Digital hard drive for a total price of 3,003 dollars. That's before the discount, right? So the price I pay for, when you take shipping into account, should be 2903 dollars, right? |

You might also check Costco for a UPS. That's where I bought mine for under $100. A Cyberpower brand with 1300va and 810watts. It came in handy during an outage. No problems with computer or UPS in a couple of years.

Thanks Wilder, I'll do that :) Anyways, wow...it says my build is already at stage 5, despite my processor supposedly not coming in until early January. While I'm happy at the speed, I do hope they've given me the right processor I chose...I might call DS to make sure :o

Might have come in earlier than expected. |

OK, I'll post a full review soon :D Before I do, though, I have a
question. My machine's hooked up and working very well indeed, and the
accessories box was full of good stuff, most notably a DVI to VGA
adaptor that was exactly what I needed 8) However, it also came with a
lot of other stuff, some of which I don't know about.
So I see an EVGA 6 pin power cord, a EVGA 8 pin power cord, and I think those are just extra, I didn't need to plug them in anywhere, right? Cause my new deskie seems to be working fine. I also saw they included a little antenna thing, but again, my computer seems to be connected to the Internet without it, so it should be good, right? And of course an emblem from EVGA, along with the remote control for changing the LED light of my computer--very nice! However, what are the metal components, screws, and electronics marked off in the lower left section of this pic I highlighted? I put ??????? over them, does anyone know what they are? But as proof my new compy is trundling along, here's a pic of it running Vindictus, smooth as can be: Like I said, I'll post a full review soon, once I know what those extra components are for, but so far I'm very happy indeed. 8) Edited by Gunlord - 07 Jan 2016 at 5:57pm |

The upper left cable looks like a front panel assist cable...it is used to you can plug all of the tiny individual connectors from the front power and reset buttons as well as the power and HDD LEDs into the assist and then plug the single large cable onto your motherboard. DS could have just done a direct connection without using it.
The lower right cables look like SATA data cables for HDDs, SSDs, and ODDs. The silver plate looks like an ATX to SFX adapter for SFX PSUs. Not sure what the brackets and screws are for, but they are probably specific for the Lian-Li PC-O5S case. |

OK guys, you've been waiting, so here's my full review (xposted to my personal blog, of course).
Bolt III Review: The third time's the charm, for the third time! Digital Storm has done it again~ I'm quite a happy camper today, my friends. My new desktop PC came in today, and it seems to be working very well! As my previous two purchases were, this one was from Digital Storm, and I'm as pleased with my third DS machine as I was with the previous two. Let me give you the lowdown. 1: Background with Digital Storm and why I bought Another DS Desktop: My previous two machines, the Bolt I and my laptop, the Lance were and are quality machines. Both still work. However, for Christmas I thought the time had come for a new one. See, a couple months ago my family and I threw out a very old computer (that we'd had for nearly 20 years, since I was in high school) from our downstairs living room, but my parents wanted something to replace it, since they occasionally do work down there. Thus, I moved my Bolt I down there along with a spare printer for them. I still had my Lance to work in my room, but that machine only had a total of 1.25 TB of storage (a 500 GB solid state main hard drive and a 750 GB secondary storage drive). I found myself needing moar, but I was also enamored with that sweet, sweet solid state speed. It usually takes a couple of minutes for a computer to boot up, but my laptop (with the system data on the solid state HD) boots up within seconds! *kisses fingers like a pleased chef* I wanted to enjoy that speed on a desktop with greater storage capacity. Now, I've heard from friends of mine that Solid State drives are much more vulnerable to damage from power loss (which laptops mitigate because they have an internal battery, allowing you to turn them off even if the power goes out), but power loss in my area is so rare that I figured I'd take the risk. It was Christmas when I made this order, so I figure I could splurge a little bit and bought my most expensive machine yet. My first desktop was a total of 1550 dollars, my laptop was a total of 2352 dollars, and this one was a total of 2903 dollars. More expensive, certainly, but this time I was going for something lavish, and I bought the other machines 3 and 1 years ago, so inflation's hitting me too :p Here's what I got for the money: 2: Order Details - Digital Storm Desktop 854929 Quantity: 1 $3,003.00 System Configuration: Sub-Total: $2,903.00 So yeah, you'll note that it was originally 3000 dollars, but they had a sale that gave me a hundred bucks off, PLUS free shipping, PLUS an extra year on the warranty! The free game from Nvidia was nice too ;D They also gave me a free box of goodies, which I'll describe later. In reference to the build of this Bolt III, aside from what I already mentioned, I got Windows 7 Professional because I always wanted a nice 32 GB ram (normal Windows only lets you get up to 16 GB), and I'm so used to Windows 7 I don't feel like going up to Windows 10 just yet. ;o I also got a 500 GB Solid State drive and a 4 TB regular drive for a total of 4.5 TB of storage space, which is more than double my old 2TB deskie (the Bolt I) and treble my 1.25 TB lappie. Still, given how much stuff I plan to put on there, maybe I should have gone for a 6 TB drive, but that was Seagate and I heard Western Digital is more reliable generally. ;D So, as other reviewers before me have done, I'll break down my experience after ordering (on December 21): 3: The Shipping Saga Digital Storm impressed, as usual, but in this case they impressed very early on. As you'll note from the order, a component (the processor) was marked backordered, so I thought DS wouldn't even start building my machine until early January, and I wouldn't get it until the middle or late of that month. Imagine my surprise when not even a day later I received word construction had started, and in a week it was done! I was suspicious, but when I called DS, they said they'd gotten in a shipment of processors very promptly and got right to work on my order. And lo and behold, on the 7th of January, days before I initially thought they'd even start on my order, my machine arrived! UPS was also prompt about delivering it and it made it to me in good condition, so I have no complaints. The box was nice and big, filled with foam for protection, and generally very good overall. 10/10 for Digital Storm and UPS! Here's some pics as proof. 3: Extra Stuff: The machine itself came in perfect condition, but first I opened up that little box you see in the third picture. It came with the Digital Storm documentation in the binder, along with the manuals for the hard drive and things like that, but also some other useful stuff. It had an EVGA poster (OK), some stands for the computer (Nice, though I don't really need them), some extra power cords for the internal components (Nice to have), but also a DVI to VGA adaptor, which I need for my TV monitor, a nice little wireless antenna (I'll describe that later), and a remote for the lighting on my machine. The adaptor was the most important thing, so Digital Storm really came through. 10/10 for the goodies. 4: The Machine Itself It's only been a day, but so far I am extremely satisfied with it. Here are some more pics: So some general notes about this. The first thing you'll notice is that it's fairly big, somewhat bigger than the Bolt I that was my first purchase from Digital Storm. That's not a problem for me, since I have enough space on my desk, as you can see, but it is something to keep in mind if space is at a premium for you. On the other hand, the physical machine itself has more than enough to make up for its size. The glowing front light looks pretty nifty and you can change its colors; you also have the option to go for internal LED lighting if you choose (I didn't). The acrylic window not only looks nice (giving you a clear view of the internals and their glows, and as you can see from the pics it's almost reflective!) but is also very easy to remove, you just have to undo the four screws at the corner. This makes it extremely easy to access the internal components and replace them if you need to, i.e you'll be able to upgrade the individual parts very easily as the years go by if you want. It's also very, very quiet. While I haven't yet ran much on it besides from Vindictus, so far, whenever I've activated it, it's made no more noise than a whisper. I literally have to put my ear right next to the acrylic glass to barely hear a low, purring whirr coming from inside. It is quite literally the least noisy computer I have ever owned. If noise reduction is important to you, I cannot recommend the Bolt III enough. As for performance, the machine is great, just as good as my Lance. It boots up within seconds, runs Vindictus smoothly and wonderfully at max settings, and generally is everything I'm looking for in a desktop. At first, the Internet was running a little slowly on it, I only got 500 kb download speeds on Steam via wireless. However, when I attached the wireless antenna they gave me, speeds quickly jumped up to 2-3 MBs, so that was definitely good. I only have two very minor complaints. First, the CD drive seems, physically, a little hard to use. I put in a couple of DVDs and CDs and they worked fine (as you can tell from the order, I got a normal CD/DVD drive because I already had a bluray player), but it's kind of hard to eject them. After I press the eject button I kind of have to drag the CD out, it doesn't just really come out of its own volition. Secondly, the back of the machine case has some metal awning type things that curl around it, so you can sort of scratch yourself plugging some things in if you're not careful. But those are fairly minor caveats. 9.8/10 for the machine itself. OVERVIEW: Good things about my experience Pretty much everything, especially the incredibly fast shipping. OVERVIEW: Bad things about my experience Pretty much nothing, except for maybe a slightly unwieldy CD drive and metal parts at the back of the computer. Suggestions for Digital Storm: Maybe look at the case for the Bolt III, the acrylic is great but slightly easier access to the back of the machine might be nice. Also, there weren't any paint options aside from black for this Bolt variant, which also might have been nice (I wanted a blue one). But those are no big deal. Things I Would Have Done Differently: Maybe I should have waited till January to order...I ordered in December for the Christmas sale, which was 100 dollars off and a free 4 year warranty, but in January they rolled out the Boxing Day Sale, which was 200 dollars off and a 5 year warranty. XD *Maybe* I should have went with the 6 GB hard drive too, since by the looks of it I'll be getting a looooooot of stuff on this compy. Ah, well... 4 GB is still pretty damn generous and my old 2 TB desktop lasted me quite a while, so I assume this should be just enough for me. Now, my previous two machines
from Digital Storm did have some difficulties at first, which I
described in my reviews of them. My Bolt froze up a little bit early on,
and my Lance had some errors in updating and an occasionally finicky
CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drive. I haven't had any problems AT ALL with this Bolt
III so far, but I am waiting for the other shoe to drop. Still, perhaps
it won't, and even if it does from my past experience Digital Storm will
fix up the problems in a snap, so I'm not worried :D In any case, perhaps Digital Storm did too well of a job...with a machine like this, assuming I take care of it well, I think I just may be set for the next 10 years or so--I probably won't need to buy another computer for a very long time! Still, if my dad ever needs a laptop, I think I'll get it from Digital Storm. Even though he's not at all a gamer, a cheap one would probably be good for him, since Digital Storm machines are by far the most reliable and dependable of any I've bought in my whole life. I'll definitely continue to recommend them to all and sundry who ask. Thanks to Snaike, bprat, hoserator, AA, and wildrator from the DS forums for their suggestions on this build! :D They really helped me make the right choices on my machine, I think. <3 Edited by Gunlord - 08 Jan 2016 at 5:40pm |
