Topic: Desktop for gaming and streaming? Posted: 22 Jan 2017 at 9:14am |
Budget:
2500 Expectations: Need a desktop that can stream any game at 1080p Usage: Gaming and streaming Hey everyone, haven't bought a computer in the last 8 years. Today finally my laptop died and I can't wait any longer to get a new PC. I really need a desktop that will allow me to use one system to stream while gaming, I don't even know where to begin since I have been out of the loop for a long time. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks everyone. Edited by Lex17 - 22 Jan 2017 at 9:47am |

Hi Lex17..... Here's a build that should meet your needs. The i7-7700k overclocked to maybe 5.o will help with the streaming, while the gtx 1070 will game great on a 1080p screen.
I took the Apollo level 2 config and tweaked it for better SSD and HDD and a better power supply and cpu cooler. The changes give you longer warranty's, more efficient psu, etc. The only unknown is if DS will get you the overclock of 5.0ghz. If not, the 7700k Turbos to 4.5 ghz, so save $99 and not overclock. You'd have to ask DS. For 1080p screen the 1070 is ideal.. Here's a link so you can compare different resolutions to games between the gtx 1070 and gtx 1080.
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1731?vs=1714 Gtx 1080 also works if you want to spend the extra money. Just isn't needed. |

Btw it seems like the Vanquish is cheaper even with the 1080 card, why is that?

The Vanquish is always a few hundred less than the fully custom rigs. even for the same performance, because they are semi custom, meaning you don't get to choose the power supply, motherboard, cpu cooler, etc.
If the budget is tight, the Vanquish is best bang for your buck. The other builds, like the one I showed you, cost more, but give you a better power supply, your choice of mobo and cpu cooler. The Vanquish 5 level 4 vs the Apollo build is cheaper for sure and has all name brand parts, but the other gives you longer warranty parts, better efficiency psu and so on. |

The problem is the vanquish ultimate is about 500 dollars less than an apollo with everything the same except motherboard and cooling, which is about a 150 dollar difference. Is there really any reason to pay 500 dollars more for an apollo? Thanks again.

There's actually just about a $300 difference between the Vanquish level 4, as is, and the Apollo configured the same. If you keep the parts the same, then, nope, not worth the extra money. The extra money becomes "worth it " if the customer wants to know exactly the mobo they're getting or wants to pick it, wants to invest in a better psu and wants to have a larger 240mm rad installed, etc.
An example....the 750 watt , non B1 for an extra $34, is a gold rated vs bronze rated unit, is fully modular, meaning all the cables are plug ins and it has a 10 year warranty vs 5 years . In 5 years would you swap a bad psu or be ready for a new rig ? That's a consideration. The extra money is for those that have it and/or want more choices. Up to you. Vanquish is tough to beat. |

These are the systems I'm looking at which comes out to 2176 for the Vanquish and the apollo is 2572. Is it really worth the 400 extra? Will post the apollo in a separate post.

I can't answer that question for you. Up to you. For some, yes it is worth the extra money for the Apollo 760t over the Vanquish 230t case, with the better mobo and better quality psu. They're willing to pay extra for the difference. For others, no it's not worth it since they perform the same and they don't care what mobo or psu they have as long as they get the job done.
My guess from the question, is that for you it's not worth the extra money, the mobo and psu not on your must have list. If I had the money, I'd grab the Apollo config. If I only had $2k, then the Vanquish and wouldn't look back. |

My pleasure. It's all about the $$.
Either way you can't go wrong. Nothing wrong with the Vanquish. DS uses all good parts, no proprietary like some builders, just some parts are better than others, like everything else. |

Well I sent an email to digital storm about my order, because I want a different 1070 than the ones they have on the list. Hope they could get one so I could finally order a desktop, no idea what I would do without a smart phone or tablet, being without a computer sucks lol.

DS will install any card you want, but they will charge extra fees for special ordering it. Or buy it yourself and send it to them, after coordinating with them.

Is there still a shortage of the 1070s, wonder why they only offer the standard weaker cards.

You can easily adjust the fans yourself using Bios, FanXpert and other programs. Or have them do it if you don't want to mess around. I say to do it yourself.
The 2nd stage noise suppression is a definite no, really no place to install deadening material. |

Thanks appreciate all of the help, will order as soon as I figure out if the 6800k is worth it, with the 7700k I could get a 1080 but I'm afraid of having streaming and gaming at the same time issues with a 7700k.

I don't stream but my understanding is that the more cores/threads the better for video streaming because of the way its encoded. Clock speed is less important for streaming but more so for gaming.

I would think with a 6800 I should have no issues with the gaming part, and might be a less of a risk for streaming also. Tough choice.

Lex17, just for clarification, when you mention streaming are you referring to streaming video content TO your PC or steaming OUT from your PC?

Streaming on twitch, so streaming out. Basically playing a game while streaming myself playing it.

It depends on which streaming application you are using and whether it is using hardware acceleration from an iGPU, only on the 4-core Intel processors. There are also dedicated hardware solutions for streaming, as well.
Video capture software that uses Intel Quicksync on the iGPU to unload some of the major encoding work from your other hardware: Predator in MSI Afterburner or Open Broadcast Software Here is a quick video on how to set up OBS to use Quicksync. If that doesn't work, you may want to consider getting a dedicated hardware solution like: Avermedia, Hauppauge, or Elgato. |

Things like elgato require a 2nd pc though right? I mean I think I'm set on going with 6800 just because of having more cores, will do the 1070 and add another one when the price goes down. Seems like the best move right? Thanks a lot.

So it seems like I could get a 5820k with a 1080, my budget would be over if I get the 6800 with the 1080. Could that be the best choice?

The 5820k is almost the same as the 6800k. The new chips aren't much of a change except being newer.
Elgato has a h60 Pro capture card that plugs into the motherboard of your existing pc to handle the streaming. They also have the external USB boxes for portability, but not as versatile. I haven't researched it, but it's certainly worth a look for your needs. You don't need sli 1070 for 1080p. A single is all you need. By the time comes to upgrade the card, new generation cards will be out. |

Wow so right before I was going to order, no more free shipping and 4 year warranty. Guess that changes things now, it will be over my budget, probably will have to wait for ryzen to come out and see if that drops the price of intel cpus.
