Hey guys (and gals!!) quick topic for discussion...

As many of you know I am about to replace one of the best purchases I have ever made with a new DS Velox. To say that I have been more than ecstatic with a computer purchased 8 years ago would be an understatement... but, time waits for no one.

I've been reading a few pages lately. Pages like:

https://www.pcgamer.com/graphics-card-price-drops-2022/
https://www.techradar.com/news/graphics-cards-to-return-to-attractive-price-by-may-says-leading-retailer
https://www.howtogeek.com/781899/nvidia-and-amd-graphics-card-prices-are-finally-going-down/

.. and I am seeing that the prices are coming down on the GPUs after years of shortages and 1000% markups. So, being the value conscious shopper that I am (read: cheap) I'm wondering and gathering other's opinions on when to buy if prices are going down enough to make a difference.

Any thoughts?

At this time, it will take quite some time for prices to come down on gaming PCs, we don't usually pay the inflated prices the e-tailers charge, and our labor/rent/utility costs have gone up.

Of course, @Alex's note is extremely relevant. However, on the topic in general...

There is actual evidence (not just pipe dreams created by influencers) the situation is improving. For example, you can now (again) purchase one of several models directly from EVGA (i.e. in stock).

Do I foresee current gen. cards going below these new MSRPs?

Not via retailers (i.e. discounts/sales) though maybe on the used marketplaces. Unfortunately, beyond some scalpers waiting until the final days to unload their stockpiles, most sales will be heavily worn units used for mining (i.e. not worthwhile IMO).

This was the point I was missing.

Thanks Alex. Still on track to order the Velox in the next 2-3 weeks, if not sooner.

Snaike,

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” It's good advice for all of us.

I love my Velox case! It is always cool to the touch and has incredible airflow!

My favorite quote along these lines (and I wish I could source it!) has always been....

"If you always want for the next thing, you'll never have any thing."

As an elderly 70 year old man, I realize if I don't get or do things quick it ain't happening.

I was on EVGA's waitlist for the 3080ti for almost a year. Before that, I was on EVGA's waitlist for the 3080 since 2020. When I first went on the waiting list, the 3080 was listed at $699. Back then, that was a mind-numbing price. Since then, prices have gone up almost 30% or more, with the 3080 now selling for $900 or more. I just paid $1,450 for the 3080ti hybrid and $3,500 for the Digital Storm.

My last PC was purchased in 2016 and it was a boutique build from ********** that was near top-of-the-line. It had one of the fastest i7s and 1080FE with all the bells and whistles. Grand total back then was $2,879. I consider today's purchase equivalent to what I purchased almost six years ago in technology terms and I'm paying almost double...

But to Onkel's point, time is money. I was in the same boat in that I wanted to wait until prices came down, but how much longer will that be while my computer slowly creeps towards obsolescence. It was the GPU becoming available that pushed me over the precipice. If that never became available, I would probably still be waiting...

....removed competitor's name....

Alex made a great point. They don't have to pay the aftermarket/scalper/e-tailer fees that have ruined the GPU market for the last few years. Digital Storm is getting their GPUs from the source and yes, this has apparently caused some delays as the manufacturer can't keep up with demand, it has nothing to do with the prices they pay for the cards they use in their builds.

This point alone makes my original question in this thread moot.

That's why Alex is exponentially smarter than me.
