It seems that you can now overclock Non-K cpu's if you have Skylake that is.
http://www.techspot.com/review/1108-intel-locked-skylake-cpu-bclk-overclocking/ Interesting that this can be done. |

Interesting for sure. Thanks for the link. With the shortage of K Skylakes, this would be a welcome turn of events if Asus and others also jump on it.
I always wonder what the downside would be, but as long as the vcore was held in check, sounds good. |

I would think that all the other motherboard builders will have to follow Asrock's lead. Since it is a BIOS change it wouldn't make sense not to do it. It seems like a lot of motherboard builders are making a lot of changes to their BIOS already. Trying to keep up with Skylake's needs.

Like Z97? You can't...the base clock on earlier processors (but after first generation Core) was not only tied to the CPU frequency, but also the PCI-e bus and other clock frequencies in the processor and caused significant stability issues with much variance.

good info there. it still seems like a YMMV case (depending on mobo support for it), but wow, what a blow to the more expensive chips the more this gets out there. i would've thought that much base clock oc'ing would play havoc with stability/memory, but it seems the ddr4 memory actually loves it.
i wonder if Intel will respond to this? |

I have to think that Intel will somehow restrict this, either by altering the instructions or "reaching out" to mobo manufacturers.
I guess the saving grace is that most consumers won't do it themselves anyways, so maybe not the impact it seems. In our world, we would. |

I think the saving grace is that the K processors are now at a higher binning and have higher default clocks now, as opposed to the non-K varieties. So, while you may be able to get more out of the non-K processors, you still won't be able to get as much as a K processor. Also, the Intel Performance Tuning Protection Plan is only available for the K and X processors.
I think if Intel were to do anything more to stop this, it would show that they have confidence that the AMD Zen platform won't be much of a threat. But, if Zen is as good as AMD is making it out to be and is near level competition with the Intel processors, Intel's best move would be to continue allowing this to boost potential performance of their processors and goodwill with the community. |
